Two portraits by Sir Thomas Lawrence come for sale at Cottone March 20

GENESO, N.Y. – Two portraits by the virtuoso English painter Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) will be presented at Cottone Auctions. The Wednesday, March 20 Fine Art and Antiques sale features two portraits of Regency beauties that come by descent from the industrialist Colonel Charles Clifton (1853-1928) of Buffalo, New York.

Clifton was an important figure in the early years of the automotive industry, overseeing the evolution of a bicycle wheel manufacturer into the Pierce-Arrow Motor Company. A recipient of the legion d’honneur for his work with the Allied war relief in France, he served on the board of the Albright Knox Art Museum from 1914 until his death in 1928.

He collected English portraiture at that extraordinary moment in the first quarter of the 20th century when prices were at their peak. The 1818 portrait of Lady Elizabeth Mary, Countess of Belgrave, who later became Marchioness of Westminster, comes with full documentation, including a copy of a 1923 receipt from Fearon Galleries in New York. It had cost a mighty $20,000, which is equivalent in purchasing power to around $400,000 today. Precisely 101 years later, the picture appears at Cottone with an estimate of $30,000-$50,000.

A second unfinished Lawrence oil depicts Lady Fitzwilliam, daughter of the Earl of Pembroke. This picture was part of the Bretby Heirlooms sale that was held for the 7th Earl and the Dowager Countess of Chesterfield by Christie’s in London in June 1918. It was acquired by Clifton from Knoedler & Co., New York, in 1923 at a cost of $9,000. This time out it is estimated at $15,000-$25,000.

A rediscovered picture from the end of the 19th century is Gossipy Market Women at Nuremberg, an oil on canvas by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). Housed in its original carved and giltwood frame attributed to Stanford White, it is estimated at $20,000-$40,000.

Painted circa 1889, while Tiffany was busy with his celebrated Havemeyer Mansion commission, this picture of three market traders in conversation was exhibited in 1891 in both New York and Chicago, and by repute was among the furnishings at Tiffany’s Oyster Bay, Long Island home Laurelton Hall. A study of the subject was kept by Tiffany at Laurelton Hall. When the house and contents were sold in the 1940s, it was given by Tiffany’s daughter, Comfort Tiffany Gilder, to the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Winter Park, Florida. The 20 by 16 ¾ inch canvas on offer descended in the family of Henry M. V. Summers (1871-1959), who was a friend of Theodore Roosevelt and an auctioneer in Oyster Bay.

Charles Allan Winter’s ‘Pandora’ unleashed dozens of bids at Cottone

Charles Allan Winter, 'Pandora,' which sold for $95,000 ($118,750 with buyer’s premium) at Cottone Auctions.

GENESEO, N.Y. — An interesting selection of art, antiques, advertising and vintage fire memorabilia came together at Cottone Auctions for its Art & Antiques two-day sale on November 29 and November 30. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Pandora, an oil on canvas by Charles Allan Winter (1869-1942), was the surprise winner for Cottone. Winter is remembered for his work with Elbert Hubbard’s Roycrofter movement, having illustrated many of Hubbard’s Little Sermons in Cosmopolitan magazine. His style became aligned with the Arts & Crafts movement for its refined and harmonious beauty. With a long and historic succession of documented exhibitions going back to 1909, Pandora would eventually find a home at the Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, New York upon its opening in 1940, just two years before the artist’s death. Estimated at $8,000-$12,000, Pandora received dozens of bids, pushing it to a final hammer of $95,000, or $118,750 with buyer’s premium.

Expected to do well, the Duffner & Kimberly Poppy floor lamp was another star performer, selling for $65,000 ($81,250 with buyer’s premium) against a $30,000-$50,000 presale estimate. The Poppy is regarded as one of the finest and most highly sought-after lamps produced by Duffner & Kimberly.

A surprise lot was the Canandaigua Beer-Ale cab light by Gillco. Designed to glow on dimly-lit tavern barbacks, the Gillcos are known as ‘cab lights’ because of their resemblance to then-contemporary roof-top signs on hacks. Gillcos are coveted by today’s collectors, as demonstrated by the bidding for this one blowing past the $500-$800 estimate to land at $12,500 ($15,625 with buyer’s premium). Gillco began issuing cab lights in 1936 and stopped in 1940 due to the high cost of production. The company would continue until 1959 when their assets were sold off. Today, it is best remembered by breweriana collectors.

A ceremonial parade fire hat marked for the United States Fire Company surprised buyers with a $10,500 hammer ($13,125 with buyer’s premium). The stunning artwork on the circa-1850 hat is attributed to David Bustill Bowser (1820-1900), an African American freeman and illustrator. The lot had been estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

GENESEO, N.Y. — Cottone Auctions held a two-day event September 29-30 with fine art, antiques and silver headlining the first session, and clocks and time pieces finishing the sale. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2).

The sale included a number of Tiffany Studios lamps, and buyers paid close attention to these lots, sending many beyond their estimates. The first day’s top lot was a Tiffany Studios Poppy table lamp, apparently reunited with the base coming from a Christie’s 1992 auction and the shade purchased from esteemed Tiffany specialist Lillian Nassau in the same year. Estimated at $50,000-$80,000, the lamp hammered at $124,000 ($155,000 with buyer’s premium).

An Andy Warhol 1975 screenprint on paper of the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger blew past its $50,000-$80,000 estimate to land at $110,000 ($137,500 with buyer’s premium). The artwork is signed in pencil by Warhol and in felt-tip pen by Jagger, and is number 204 of a 250 (plus 50 artist proofs) edition.

The timepiece segment of the sale was dominated by what was called a “rare and fine” Aaron Dodd Crane carousel year-going astronomical clock. Manufactured by Boston Clock Company around 1850, the gilt frame on marble base appears to be in nearly perfect original condition. Cottone had estimated it at $30,000-$50,000, but a determined bidder stayed the course until the lot hammered at $65,000 ($81,250 with buyer’s premium).

Vintage Bakelite radios were an interesting inclusion in the sale, and without exception, all did very well. The top-selling Bakelite lot of the day was a circa-1941 Motorola Aero-Vane Model no. 51×16 table radio. Estimated at $500-$800, it hammered for $3,500 ($4,375 with buyer’s premium).

GENESEO, N.Y. — A lifetime of public service and private collecting come to light with the auction of the Hugh Douglas Barclay (1932-2021) estate by Cottone Auctions on Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30. Bidding is now available at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2).

Barclay was an attorney in upstate New York and entered politics in 1965, serving as a New York state senator until 1984. Having worked as a board member for an organization owned by President George H. W. Bush, Barclay was eventually appointed ambassador to El Salvador by President George W. Bush, serving from late 2003 until 2006.

The Barclay collection dominates Day 1 of the sale and includes a large selection of silver items, historic Americana and other objects found in a well-appointed home. This Paul Storr (London, 1819) set of George III silver wine coolers, liners and stands is in remarkable condition, and carries an estimate of $50,000-$80,000.

Perfect for any dinner setting, the Barclay collection also includes two Georg Jensen five-light candelabras from the 1925-1932 period and weighing 408 troy ounces. They are estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

Day 1 expands beyond the Barclay estate to include nearly 40 Tiffany Studios items, mostly the highly sought-after table lamps. A circa-1915 Tiffany Studios dichroic Jeweled Dragonfly table lamp with the Pony Tree Trunk base is an example of the fine quality found in this group. It is estimated at $50,000-$80,000.

Day 2 is dominated by clocks and timepieces. A leading example is a circa-1850 Aaron Dodd Crane carousel year-going astronomical timepiece from the Boston Clock Company. With a gilt frame on a marble base and wonderful action, it is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

Visit the catalogs now at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2) and sign up to bid on these fine items and much more.
