Gorham Martelé turtle soup tureen and plates come to Doyle April 10

NEW YORK – A turtle soup tureen and 12 matching soup plates from Gorham’s exclusive Martelé range will be presented at Doyle New York. Offered as part of the Manhattan firm’s Wednesday, April 10 auction of American Art, Silver, Furniture & Décor, the two lots are estimated at $10,000-$20,000 and $7,000-$10,000, respectively.

Turtle soup, which first became a delicacy on European tables with the emergence of the West Indies trade in the 18th century, was hugely popular among the elite of American society at the turn of the 20th century. It was the favorite dish of the 27th U.S. president, William Howard Taft, who went so far as to hire a chef at the White House for the specific purpose of preparing turtle soup.

Gorham’s archives list four similar ‘terrapin sets’ in the handmade Martelé line. Another terrapin tureen of a differing model, with 12 bowls, was sold by Sotheby’s New York in April 2023 for $30,000.

Like the others, Doyle’s example would have been hugely expensive. As a point of reference, the archives report that a similar Martelé tureen took 136 hours to make and 158 hours to chase, all in the context of a 60-hour week. The net factory price was $520. The dishes, priced at $50 each, took more than eight hours each to ‘raise’, and thereafter required around 20 hours of chasing.

The tureen, with its turtle finial and stand with stylized shell and seaweed feet, dates to 1912 and weighs 124 troy ounces. Across the bombe-form body and domed cover it is chased with scrolling seaweed and ripples to replicate water.

Each of the dozen matching soup plates are chased and engraved to the scalloped borders with turtles, shells, and seaweed. They weigh a total of 147 troy ounces.

The trade name Martelé derives from the French verb ‘marteler’ (to hammer), denoting the distinctive hand-hammered surface of the silverware. The range was produced in Gorham’s Providence, Rhode Island workshops by its best silversmiths under the direction of Englishman William Christmas Codman (1839-1921).

Leading the 18th-century silver is a previously unrecorded inverted pear form teapot by Swiss-born silversmith Daniel Christian Fueter (1720-1785), who worked in the latest fashions in New York. Dated 1762 to the base, it is engraved with the crest and initials of descendants of Albert Albertszen Terhune (circa 1623-1685), a Huguenot ribbon weaver from Holland who settled in Gravesend in Kings County (now part of Brooklyn). The teapot, one of only a few examples of holloware by Fueter in private hands, is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

NEW YORK – It’s not every day that a Diego Rivera work unseen for decades comes to auction, but that is exactly what will happen on Wednesday, March 13 at Doyle. Its 20th Century Abstraction / Latin American Art sale contains four works once owned by Irving Berlin, and the Diego Rivera among them was commissioned from the Mexican artist by the American songwriter and composer of Broadway hits. The sale catalog is now open for bidding on LiveAuctioneers.

The two legends met during a Christmas trip to Mexico that Berlin took in 1947. Berlin refused Rivera’s offer of a portrait sitting and countered with a request for cover artwork for sheet music for his song In Acapulco. Rivera agreed, and delivered a watercolor on paper of people frolicking on the beach as musicians play in the background, along with a color chart and detailed handwritten notes. After Berlin’s label rejected the image, he squirreled it away in his house, where it slumbered, seen only by himself and his family members. The Rivera work is estimated at $200,000-$400,000.

On the same trip, Berlin also visited the renowned muralist José Clemente Orozco at his studio and acquired two works directly from him. A vibrant oil-on-Masonite Day of the Dead scene now carries an estimate of $150,000-$250,000, and a gouache on paper dubbed Untitled (Three Figures) is estimated at $20,000-$40,000. A fourth work Berlin acquired on a trip to Haiti, the oil-on-Masonite Fete du Morts by the Haitian artist Hector Hyppolite, is also on offer with an estimate of $80,000-$120,000.

The foursome was consigned from the estate of Mary Ellin Barrett, Irving Berlin’s eldest daughter, who often accompanied him on his trips and discussed them in her 1994 book Irving Berlin: A Daughter’s Memoir.

NEW YORK — Freddie Mercury mania in 2023 was not confined to Sotheby’s in London. The December 15 Stage and Screen sale at Doyle included a group of ephemera relating to Mercury’s role as short-lived frontman with the heavy blues band Ibex. Estimated at $12,000-$18,000, it hammered for $40,000 ($52,400 with buyer’s premium).

It was after graduating from Ealing Art College that Mercury (1946-1991) bought a guitar, taught himself to play, and began writing songs in the spring of 1969. By the summer he had been introduced to a Liverpool trio of Mike Bersin (guitar), John Taylor (bass) and Mick ‘Miffer’ Smith (drums), who were looking for a singer.

Included in this lot was an original ticket to the debut performance of Ibex at Honiton Hall in Warrington, England, dated May 23, 1969, together with photographs of Mercury and this early group of friends and bandmates. However, its principal attraction was a letter sent by Mercury to Miffer Smith on October 16, 1969. Across two pages, Mercury covers seeing Led Zeppelin at the Lyceum (he describes Robert Plant’s performance as “orgasmic”), his sexuality (“I hear from several sources that you’ve informed them that I’ve turned into a fully-fledged queer”) and upcoming gigs with the bands Wreckage and Smile. The latter, on December 6, 1969, was one of Mercury’s earliest performances with Brian May and Roger Taylor, and the rest, as they say, is rock and roll history.

The auction house said it could find very few letters from Freddie Mercury in the auction record and none from this early period before the success of Queen.

The sale also included a group of 21 pencil and gouache costume sketches by Edith Head (1897-1981) from the collection of E.J. Gonzalez. These produced mixed results, but five designs created for Grace Kelly sailed well above their estimates. Hammered for $20,000 ($26,200 with buyer’s premium) was a circa-1955 sketch for a wedding dress intended for the future Princess Grace on her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco.

Given her close friendship with Kelly, Edith Head had been first choice to design the dress. However, as Head was contracted to Paramount at the time and Kelly to MGM, the Hollywood star chose Helen Rose to create what became one of the most famous dresses of the 20th century. Clearly frustrated by the outcome, Head drew a large X through this design.

Head won a record eight Academy Awards between 1949 and 1973 from a remarkable total of 35 nominations. Among them was the Hitchcock classic To Catch A Thief, in which Kelly played the role of Frances Stevens. Head’s drawing for a ball gown with a strapless bodice and a full white skirt hammered for $13,000 ($17,030 with buyer’s premium).

And a 1936 poster for the Universal film My Man Godfrey, estimated at $3,000-$5,000, hammered for $10,000 ($13,100 with buyer’s premium). A classic Depression-era screwball comedy, it starred real-life former husband and wife William Powell and Carole Lombard. This is the rarer of two issues of the film’s one-sheets and a design praised for its realistic depiction of the actors. Two copies recently sold at Heritage Auctions, for $70,000 in April 2022 and $20,000 in October 2023. Doyle’s poster came from the collection of composer and producer Robert A. Israel.

NEW YORK — The Rare Books, Autographs & Maps sale at Doyle New York brought to market a fascinating collection of items from the estate of anti-ivory activist Esmond Bradley Martin. The lots, which largely focused on Zanzibar, the archipelago off the eastern coast of Africa, delighted bidders and were among the best performers of the sale. Martin (1941-2018) was a geographic expert who settled in Nairobi, Kenya with his wife to research and write historical and anthropological subject matter. His life took a permanent turn when he was retained by the World Wildlife Fund and others to produce an estimate of the worldwide trade in ivory. His published findings in 1979 transformed him into an anti-ivory activist and culminated in a worldwide ban on ivory sales in 2017. He was killed in 2018 during what local police called a botched robbery, but many suspect the attack was related to his ongoing work documenting the illicit ivory and rhino horn trade.

Martin maintained a fascination with the history of Zanzibar, now part of Tanzania. His collection produced notable, estimate-exceeding results on the subject, including:

  • A personal memory album compiled by the staff or family of British Consul-General Edward Clarke during his 1910-1911 administration in Zanzibar; estimated at $600-$900, it sold for $9,500 ($12,445 with buyer’s premium).
  • An interesting and extremely rare group of letters and documents from Zanzibar, including correspondence from various sultans and kings of the period; estimated at $500-$800, it sold for $8,000 ($10,480 with buyer’s premium).
  • A photo album entitled Zanzibar: 1909 and 1910; estimated at $500-$800, it sold for $7,000 ($9,170 with buyer’s premium).
  • A photo album compiled by W. J. Frazer of HMS St George of the Anglo-Zanzibar War; estimated at $700-$1,000, it sold for $6,500 ($8,515 with buyer’s premium).

An unrelated item from the Martin collection topped the sale at $190,000 ($248,900 with buyer’s premium). The first Latin edition of the earliest collection of voyages, including Columbus and Vespucci, by Antonio Fracanzano da Montalboddo, dating to 1508. Montalboddo’s collection is significant for the early accounts of the exploration of the Americas, which include the first three voyages of Columbus between 1492 and 1500; the third voyage of Vespucci — to Brasil — which took place in 1501-1502; and Pedro Alvares Cabral’s discovery of the Brasilian, Guianaian and Venezuelan coasts in 1500-1501.

An amazing collection of sketches by famed wardrobe designer Edith Head represent the sale’s most interesting lots. The Academy Award-winning designer had a decades-long career in Hollywood costuming the top actresses of the Golden Age, including Audrey Hepburn in her Academy Award-winning turn in 1953’s Roman Holiday. Head’s silver brocade dress appears in the opening scene of the film, when the princess is shown in newsreels greeting and dancing with dignitaries at an official reception. Head would win her fifth Academy Award for her work on the film (she would ultimately earn eight during her lifetime). The illustration is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

Fans of the legendary rock band Queen will thrill to this hand-written letter and portrait sketch by Freddie Mercury. Sent to his bandmate Mick ‘Miffer’ Smith of Mercury’s first group, Ibex, the 1969 letter is a dazzling look into Mercury’s experiences at the time, and the illustration reveals the showman’s hidden talents as a fine illustrator. An Anderson & Sheppard fuchsia pink double-breasted velvet tuxedo blazer worn by Daniel Craig to the premiere of No Time To Die is a must-have for fans of the modern James Bond franchise. Craig donned the blazer for the London Royal Albert Hall premiere of the film on September 28, 2021, and the lot is accompanied by a press photograph of him wearing it. In addition, the blazer’s inside lining features Daniel Craig’s signature on the left side. No Time To Die was Daniel Craig’s fifth and final turn as James Bond. DALLAS — This pair of Qianlong (1735-96) cloisonné standing lion dogs with riders were offered at Heritage Auctions on September 20 with a provenance to George Ann Brown Carter, wife of Fort Worth, Texas media scion Amon Giles Carter Jr (1919-82). He had often worked with famed Asian art dealer C.T. Loo and his successor Frank Caro to build the family collection, and had bought this 19in (48cm) pair in hardwood stands from Caro in 1960.

Each has professional restoration to the face, along with enamel loss to the face and body, but were modestly estimated at $6,000-$8,000. Together, they hammered for $140,000 ($175,000 including buyer’s premium). Heritage Auctions’ September 20 Fine & Decorative Asian Art sale was previewed in New York but was conducted at the firm’s Dallas headquarters.

NEW YORK — Estimated at $30,000-$50,000, an ink and color on paper hanging scroll by Shi Lu (1919-82) hammered for the mighty sum of $430,000 ($550,400 including buyer’s premium) at Bonhams’ auction of Fine Chinese Paintings on September 19.

Picking Cotton was painted in New Delhi in 1955, the year the artist – author of the Red Classic paintings charting the course of the Chinese revolution – visited India to oversee the design of the Chinese Pavilion at the Indian Industries Fair. On his return to China, Shi Lu used his sketch book to produce a series of finished paintings of the local scenery and the members of the rural population he had encountered.

The 2ft 2in by 21in (66 by 54cm) image of two Indian farmhands in traditional costume seen through the Chinese gaze came for sale from the celebrated collector Reverend Richard Fabian.

Founder and rector of an ecumenical church in San Francisco, he began buying Chinese art and objects when he was chaplain at his alma mater, Yale, and took collecting advice on Chinese paintings from Tsao Jung-ying, founder of the Far East Fine Arts gallery, after moving to San Francisco in the late 1970s. At the time, works by many of today’s biggest names could be bought for less than $1,000.

The collection, elements of which have been sold by both Sotheby’s and Bonhams in recent years, has been the subject of exhibitions in both San Francisco and Honolulu and two substantial catalogs: Between the Thunder and the Rain: Chinese Paintings from the Opium War Through the Cultural Revolution, 1840-1979 (Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, 2001) and New Songs on Ancient Tunes: 19th-20th Century Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy from the Richard Fabian Collection (Honolulu Academy of Art, 2007). This Shi Lu work was pictured in both volumes.

NEW YORK — Among the most admired lots in Doyle’s September 20-21 Asia Week sale was this Chinese monochrome and anhua-decorated dragon dish. It hammered for $22,500 ($29,475 including buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.

The 8in (20cm) dish dates from the Kangxi period (1661-1722), but has the apocryphal reign mark of the Ming Xuande emperor (1426-35). At the time, the Manchu Qing dynasty was in its relative infancy, and the emperor was keen to connect the return of court-sponsored porcelain-making at Jingdezhen with the last great era of Han Chinese imperial production. However, the design was not simply an honorific copy. The anhua (faintly incised) technique was one pioneered on Transitional and Kangxi wares with dragons often concealed in the interior of bowls.

NEW YORK — During the Three Kingdoms period in Korea (57 B.C.-668 A.D.) constant warfare inspired belief in a savior deity. A cult sprung up around Maitreya or Miruk Bosal (the Buddha of the Future), who it was believed would return to earth to save humankind.

This 9in gilt-bronze figure of Miruk Bosal in meditation is thought to date from the first half of the 7th century and the beginning of the Unified Silla period (668-935). Considered to be the first unified kingdom of the Korean people, it was something of a golden age for art and culture when Buddhism flourished, and a national Confucian college was established in 682.

This figure, examined by Chong Young-Ho (1934-2017), Buddhist scholar and professor of archaeology at the Korea National University of Education, is a rare form in surprisingly good condition. It is complete save the additional flowing scarves that were once attached to the right and left forearms.  The top lot in Bonhams’ Fine Japanese and Korean Art sale in New York on September 20, it sold at the lower end of its $200,000-$300,000 estimate ($254,500 including buyer’s premium).

NEW YORK — Born in 1942 in Niigata Prefecture into a family of copperware masters, the metalworker Tamagawa Norio achieved the status of Living National Treasure in Japan in 2010. He is best known as a champion of the mokumegane (forged and marbleized) technique which, through a multi-alloy laminate, creates distinctive layered patterns resembling the grain of wood or the look of marble.

Signed and sealed Tamagawa Norio and dated Heisei nijūsannen (2011) this 9in vase sold for $14,000 ($17,900 including buyer’s premium) at Bonhams’ Fine Japanese and Korean Art sale in New York on September 20.

NEW YORK — On September 13, Doyle New York offered property from the estate of Donald D. MacDermid and his landmark Greek Revival home in Chester, Connecticut. The proceeds of the sale benefitted the American School in Switzerland, where MacDermid attended from 1961.

Something of an anglophile and with many friends in London, works by several British artists were well represented in the collection.

Estimated at $20,000-$40,000 was a posthumous cast of Charles Sargeant Jagger’s celebrated Maquette for The Driver, a figure that appears in the Royal Artillery Memorial on Hyde Park Corner in London. Made in 1921-25, the monument features a model howitzer in stone surrounded by four soldiers in bronze, including The Driver, standing with arms outstretched.

The maquette’s presence in the collection reflected Donald MacDermid’s family history. His uncle and namesake, Lt. Donald R. MacDermid, was killed in action fighting for the British in France. Original casts are few and very expensive (Christie’s sold one in 2006 for a premium-inclusive £422,500). However, this 2ft 10in version is number 6/10 from an edition created by The Fine Art Society, London. The hammer price was $32,500 ($42,575 with buyer’s premium).

Also purchased from The Fine Art Society — it had formed part of its exhibition The Rustic Image in 1979 — was Boy on a Beach by Henry Scott Tuke (1858-1929). One of the artist’s many Impressionist-style images of nude young men and boys, it measured 10 by 14in (25 by 35cm) and was dated 1912.

Tuke first painted these oil studies of young male nudes during a tour of Italy in his early twenties, but the theme did not become central to his work until he had moved back to Cornwall, England in the late 1880s. This work, showing the subject from behind, was painted when the artist enjoyed a considerable reputation. He was elected to the Royal Academy two years later in 1914. Estimated at an appealing $15,000-$25,000, it took $55,000 ($72,050 with buyer’s premium).

Sold at $27,500 ($36,025 with buyer’s premium) was Henry Lamb Bathing by Augustus John (1878-1961). The youthful subject, shown in striped bathing trunks standing on a rocky outcrop, was the Australian-born painter Henry Taylor Lamb (1883-1960), who was a founding member of the both the London Group and the Camden Town Group. Augustus John was Lamb’s mentor and best friend.

The 17 by 15in oil on canvas board had last sold at Sotheby’s in June 1996 for £3,600. Reputations have increased significantly since then, and this time, bidding went well above the $12,000-$18,000 estimate.

NEW YORK – Doyle will hold an American Furniture, Silver, Decorative Arts, and Folk Art auction on Tuesday, May 2, beginning at 10 am Eastern time. It features fine American furniture spanning nearly 150 years; folk art and American country furniture from several collections; nautical antiques from a prominent private collection, including a group of colorful woolwork maritime scenes; an array of American silver and decorative arts; and a selection of Chinese export porcelain. Among the sale’s varied highlights are folk portraits by William Matthew Prior, a sand art bottle by Andrew Clemens, a high chest of drawers from Salem, Massachusetts, and furniture from the late 18th and early 19th centuries attributed to accomplished American cabinetmakers and clockmakers from Baltimore to Boston. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
