LONDON — Apollo Art Auctions has enjoyed tremendous success as the auction branch of Apollo Galleries, London’s renowned specialists in ancient art and antiquities. Since its inception, Apollo Art Auctions has conducted its online auctions at its parent company’s premises, but with its 501-lot sale on Sunday, November 5 will begin conducting both live and online sales from London’s West End at 63-64 Margaret Street. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale’s top-estimated lot is a circa-600 BCE Greek bronze combat helmet of archaic Corinthian type, hammered from a single sheet of bronze and completely intact, without repairs or restoration. This helmet would have been owned by a wealthy member of the social elite. It is accompanied by a professional historical report from Ancient Report Specialists, and it is estimated at £60,000-£120,000 ($72,600-$145,200).

A relic of the Cycladic II period of ancient Greek history, this Chalandriani-type female idol made from white marble is dated to circa 2800-2300 BCE. Similar idols can be viewed in the collections of the Louvre and the Archaeological Museum of Athens. It comes with a professional historical report from Ancient Report Specialists and has an estimate of £60,000-£100,000 ($72,600-$121,000).

In remarkable condition is an amphora from the Attic black-figure period, possibly attributed to the Antimenes Painter, who worked from around 530 to 510 BCE. The amphora has been TL-tested by the CIRAM laboratory in France and is clear on the Art Loss Register database, having been in a U.S. collection for some time. The lot is estimated at £45,000-£90,000 ($54,450-$108,900).

A Roman marble bust of Homer is another star lot in Apollo’s sale. Estimated to be from the Flavian to Antonine period, circa 70-200 CE, the bust has typical damage to the face, believed to be attributed to early Christian vandalism due to its pagan origin. The Homer bust is clear on the Art Loss Register database and comes from the private collection of a London gentleman. Its estimate is £40,000-£60,000 ($48,400-$72,600).
