TOKYO (AP) – Issey Miyake, who built one of Japan’s biggest fashion brands and was known for his boldly sculpted pleated pieces as well as former Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ black turtlenecks, has died. He was 84. Miyake died August 5 of liver cancer, the Miyake Design Office said on August 9.

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Nichelle Nichols, who broke barriers for Black women in Hollywood when she played communications officer Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek television series, has died at the age of 89.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Paul Sorvino, an imposing actor who specialized in playing crooks and cops such as Paulie Cicero in Goodfellas and the NYPD sergeant Phil Cerreta on Law & Order, has died. He was 83. His publicist Roger Neal said he died July 25 of natural causes at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Sorvino had dealt with health issues during the past few years.

NEW YORK (AP) – Cuban-born artist Carmen Herrera, whose radiant color and geometric paintings were overlooked for decades before the art world took notice, has died. She was 106.

NEW YORK (AP) – Chuck Close, a painter, photographer and printmaker best known for his monumental grid portraits and photo-based paintings of family and famous friends, has died. He was 81. His attorney, John Silberman, said Close died August 19 at a hospital in Oceanside, New York. He did not give a cause of death.
