LONDON – A £2 million ($2.45 million) collection from Ombersley Court, a Grade I-listed country house in the county of Worcestershire in England, will be offered for sale at Christie’s on Wednesday, November 29. The early 18th-century home with Baroque and Regency interiors was the dwelling of the Sandys family for nearly 300 years before it was sold in 2017. The catalog is now available for preview at LiveAuctioneers.

Some of the family’s artworks were given to institutions. For example, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s portrait of Marcus Hill, 3rd Baron Sandys (1798-1863), was acquired by Historic Royal Palaces for Hillsborough Castle in northern Ireland. However, the remaining collection, some 220 lots, will be offered at Christie’s. Among them are Old Master paintings, furniture, silver, Asian art, militaria and decorative arts.

The collection was assembled during the course of more than 450 years by members of the Sandys and Hill families. Estimates range from £500 to £500,000 ($613-$613,000), with lots estimated at £1,000 ($1,200) or below offered without reserve.

Christie’s specialist Adrian Hume-Sayer said: “Sales such as this are rare today. The collection from Ombersley Court follows a single family over the course of more than 400 years and the objects’ unbroken provenance weaves a captivating story.”

Many of the works of art were acquired or commissioned for Ombersley following the construction of the present house in the early 18th century, with others coming to the family by inheritance.

Among the significant lots coming up at Christie’s are four monumental naval scenes by Willem van de Velde the Younger and Studio, which have been in the family since they were commissioned in the late 17th century. The group — which includes one of the Dutch artist’s largest paintings — is from a series of seven oils commissioned by Admiral Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford (1652-1727) for his house, Chippenham Hall, near Cambridge, England circa 1693-98.

Russell was a member of the group dubbed the ‘Immortal Seven’ who invited William of Orange to come to England and seize the throne from James II – the so-called ‘Glorious Revolution’ of 1688. Following his death in 1727, the paintings passed to his great-niece, Letitia Tipping, Lady Sandys, in whose family they have descended until the present day.

The late Lord Sandys (1931-2013) was a Conservative politician. When his wife Patricia, Lady Sandys, died in 2015 without heirs, Ombersley Court was sold in 2017 to local businessman Tim Hopkins.

An English Two-Decker of the Red Squadron at Sea, one of a set of four monumental naval scenes by Willem van de Velde the Younger and Studio, is estimated at £300,000-£500,000 ($367,900-$613,200) at Christie’s sale of art and antiques from Ombersley Court. It is thought that the main ship may be the 64-gun Defiance, which was built in 1675 and commanded by Admiral Edward Russell in 1677, or the Swiftsure, built in 1673 and commanded by Russell from 1678.
