NEW YORK – The Important Fine Art & Design sale taking place Sunday, October 22 at Auctions at Showplace is headlined by a real winner: a 14K gold Neoclassical Revival lidded double-handled trophy by Reed & Barton, which was awarded by the Jockey Club to Prove Out, the victor in a 1973 horse race held at the Aqueduct Racetrack in the New York City borough of Queens.

The owner of the horse was Jack Dreyfus (1913-2009), founder of the Dreyfus Funds and a distant relative of Alfred Dreyfus. He had a colorful life, becoming a vocal advocate of Phenytoin, an anticonvulsant that he claimed had relieved his anxiety and depression, going so far as to author the book A Remarkable Medicine Has Been Overlooked and offering the drug to President Richard Nixon. A signed copy of Dreyfus’s other book, The Two Lives of Jack Dreyfus – The Lion of Wall Street, is part of the lot on offer, which is estimated at $60,000-$80,000.

Also appearing in the sale is a furniture set by Michael Coffey (b. 1928-), a sculptor and master woodworker who published his first book in August 2023 with Pointed Leaf Press. Designed in 1992, the wall-mounted console dressing table with a matching stool reflects his penchant for puckish product names: he dubbed it Menage a Trois. Fashioned from Mozambique wood and signed underneath the vanity and the stool, it carries an estimate of $10,000-$20,000.

A standout contemporary ceramics lot is by the Japanese artist Yoshiro Kimura (b. 1946-): a Hekiyo (aka blue-glazed) studio pottery bowl with a Renmon rippling wave effect, estimated at $4,000-$6,000. Kimura is enraptured by the deep, alluring blues seen in the oceans and the skies and strives to impart them to his works, which have entered the collections of the Musée national de céramique-Sèvres, the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
