Explore contemporary fine art at Visual Odyssey Jan. 16 in New York

Roy Lichtenstein poster for the Department of 21st Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum, estimated at $3,000-$3,500 at Jasper52.

NEW YORK — More than 80 lots of fine art prints, some signed by the artist, are ready to frame and decorate the home or office in Jasper52‘s Visual Odyssey: Contemporary Fine Art sale, slated for Tuesday, January 16 and starting at 8 pm Eastern time. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

One of the most prolific artists of the 20th century was Salvador Dali (1904-1989). So strong was the demand for his works that he essentially pioneered the art print category, issuing numerous reproductions of his originals and adding edition numbering and his signature for extra value. Crazy, Crazy, Crazy Minerv is a 1971 edition, numbered 151 of 175 and signed by Dali. It comes from the portfolio Memories of Surrealism published by the Transworld Art Corporation of New York and carries a $11,000-$13,000 estimate.

David Drome is a modern Surrealist whose Surreal Constellation was released as a 200-print edition in 1970. This example is numbered 115 and features his trademark use of vibrant color and perspective. It is estimated at $350-$400.

Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was an icon of the Pop Art movement who combined elements from popular culture into fine art. This poster from the Metropolitan Museum of Art features his classic half-tone dot patterns with elements of Surrealism and comic book art. It is estimated at $3,000-$3,500.

Surreal world of Salvador Dali celebrated in New York Nov. 25

Salvador Dali, ‘Arise, Barak, and lead,’ estimated at $1,100-$1,500 at Jasper52.

NEW YORK – On Saturday, November 25, starting at 6 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct a sale titled Dali Masterpieces: Surreal Enigma. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Leading the highlights and the sale overall is the original Dali lithograph on Arches paper titled Arise, Barak, and lead, which has an estimate of $1,100-$1,500. The pencil-signed artist’s proof was printed in 1973 in France.

However, the overwhelming majority of the 95 lots in the sale are woodcuts from Dali’s epic mid-century project based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, which ultimately yielded a suite of prints in 1964.

Dali tackled all three volumes of Dante – Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, aka heaven – and two of those realms are reflected in the remaining highlights, which are both estimated at $450-$550: The Thieves – Hell 24 and also Virgils Reproaches – Purgatory 5.

OAKLAND, Calif. — A textbook oil by the French Impressionist Henry Moret (1856-1913) leads the field at Clars Auction Gallery this week. The Dutch coastal scene dating to the year 1900 has an estimate of $50,000-$70,000 and is part of a two-day series set for Thursday, September 14 and Friday, September 15 (Day 1, Day 2).

Moret is best known for his involvement in the Pont-Aven artist colony and his richly colored landscapes of Brittany. He enjoyed a particularly fruitful relationship with the influential dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who maintained a number of galleries in Paris, London and New York and sold an estimated 600 paintings this way.

Moret only infrequently traveled away from Pont-Aven, but a number of his works dated 1900 depict Holland. Maisons à Volendam, Hollande is a strong example of his bold palette choices and forceful and short brushstrokes, a style he credited much to Claude Monet.

From the other end of the 20th century is a late work by Andy Warhol (1928-1987). Sitting Bull, derived from an archival photo of the Sioux chief, was originally part of the Pop artist’s Cowboys and Indians portfolio completed in 1986, but was later replaced by another subject. There was no published edition. It is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

The Fall Modern + Contemporary Art Auction on September 14 features prints by a number of blue-chip names including Francis Bacon, Salvador Dali, Wayne Thiebaud and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Leading a fine selection of 20th-century photographs is Fayel Tall by artist and writer Peter Beard (1938–2020). This 1995 image of the Kenyan model posing in a mudcloth skirt relates to The End of the Game, the photo book documenting the issues facing wildlife in Kenya that brought him fame in the 1960s. An inscription on the left of the photograph quotes a passage from book. The unique gelatin silver print has an estimate of $20,000-$40,000.

The following day’s Collectors Auction includes one of the famous elephant folio prints from John James Audubon’s The Birds of America. Canvas Backed Ducks or Fuligula vallisneria formed part of the classic 1836 Robert Havell edition and carries the watermark for J Whatman Turkey Mill. It is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Dali Museum will present more than 100 works on paper from the museum’s vault in Where Ideas Come From: Dali’s Drawings from May 27 through Oct. 22. Showcasing the artist’s utilization of various media, including pencil, pen, charcoal, watercolor and gouache, Dali’s Drawings will highlight Dali’s creative process throughout the many phases of his career. More than half of the artworks will be on view for the first time in 35 years and will rarely be displayed again due to their fragile nature. Through the support of donations from the community, the majority of the works featured in the exhibition were recently conserved — for the first time — in alignment with the Dali’s mission to care for and share Dali’s work and legacy.
