CHICAGO — Back-to-back same-day sales are scheduled for Hindman on Tuesday, November 14. The day begins with Modern Design at 11 AM Eastern time, showcasing 250 curated lots from top names across the world of design. Following at 4 PM Eastern time is Early 20th Century Design, which boasts names such as Tiffany Studios, Handel, and Gustav Stickley. Both catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers (Morning, Afternoon).

Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) was a leader in mid-century Danish design, bringing the clean and often austere look into homes worldwide. The morning session has seven Wegner lots, topped by the iconic Papa Bear lounge chair and ottoman. Also known as the AP Stolen model no. AP-19, the duo features classic teak with fine upholstery and carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.

Famed glass studio artist Jon Kuhn (b. 1949-) is also well represented by six lots. Kuhn’s cut-glass approach is designed to accept and then redirect inbound light back to the viewer in unexpected and remarkable ways. His 1995 work Cubed to the 7th features seven art-glass cubes encased into a larger rectangular glass enclosure, producing his trademark lighting effects. The lot is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

The morning’s top lot is a circa-1965 mirror by Line Vautrin (1913-1997), the famed metalworker whose jewelry and decor items are highly treasured by collectors and designers alike. The lot is sold with a certificate of authenticity issued by the Comite Line Vautrin, and is estimated at $50,000-$70,000.

The afternoon session includes a small selection of Tiffany Studios items, dominated by a magnificent stained leaded glass window Musician in the Cove. Dating to circa 1890, the window features a woman playing a stringed instrument with a view of the shore behind her shoulders. The 73.5 by 44in piece is estimated at $15,000-$30,000.

Stickley furniture and lighting collectors will find plenty of opportunities as well. A sideboard by Gustav Stickley (1858-1942) known as #901 Eastwood, NY is made of fumed oak with iron hardware. Measuring 39.5 by 50 by 23in, it carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.

Noted industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague (1883-1960) is remembered for helping create the concept of industrial design, along with other luminaries such as Raymond Loewy and Henry Dreyfus. His groundbreaking designs for Kodak; Texaco; the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad; and Steuben / Corning Glass are among his career highlights. This set of Embassy glasses for competitor Libbey Glass totals 18, along with two related glasses. The lot is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

MUNICH — A trio of sales held across two days is planned for Quittenbaum, with a two-part Art Deco and Art Nouveau sale spanning Tuesday, November 14 and Wednesday, November 15, and a third session featuring 1920s Weimar-era figurative ceramics from KPM Meissen and Goldscheider on the 15th. All three catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers (Session 1, Session 2, Session 3).

French Art Nouveau titan Émile Gallé (1846-1904) is considered a father of the movement’s glass and furniture, and Quittenbaum’s sale features an astounding 47 lots representing his work. The top-estimated lot is a Nancy Soufflé Rhododendron table light, created in the 1925-36 timeframe, well after his death. The cased glass is opalescent, colorless, yellow and violet, and blown using the so-called “soufflé” technique. The lamp is estimated at €80,000-€90,000 ($84,896-$95,508).

The first session is similarly heavy with a fine range of Lalique. Vases, figurals and paperweights are all well-represented and include this René Lalique Ronces vase dated 1921 but likely produced before 1947 at either Combs-la-Ville or Wingen-sur-Moder. It is estimated at €3,500-€4,500 ($3,714-$4,775).

Fans of Gabriel Argy-Rousseau (1885-1953), a master of pâte de verre (glass paste), have 11 lots from which to choose. His 1925 Floréal table light features his trademark pâte de verre technique and is estimated at €20,000-€24,000 ($21,224-$25,468).

The second session leads with a bronze by Alexander Kéléty (circa-1874-1940) whose Art Deco sculptures were widely exhibited between the two world wars throughout Europe. Archer is dated 1930, from the peak of his career, features a dark brown and greenish patina and carries the manufacturer’s mark ETLING Paris. It’s estimated at €30,000-€40,000 ($31,836-$42,448).

The third session, titled Mythological Beauties. Figurative Ceramics, is packed with 155 lots, dominated by KPM Meissen porcelain figurals from the Weimar period. Leading this session is a KPM Meissen execution of Arthur Lange’s Night from 1901, but thought to have been produced before 1924. The 17in figure is estimated at €6,000-€8,000 ($6,367-$8,489).

GENESEO, N.Y. — Cottone Auctions held a two-day event September 29-30 with fine art, antiques and silver headlining the first session, and clocks and time pieces finishing the sale. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2).

The sale included a number of Tiffany Studios lamps, and buyers paid close attention to these lots, sending many beyond their estimates. The first day’s top lot was a Tiffany Studios Poppy table lamp, apparently reunited with the base coming from a Christie’s 1992 auction and the shade purchased from esteemed Tiffany specialist Lillian Nassau in the same year. Estimated at $50,000-$80,000, the lamp hammered at $124,000 ($155,000 with buyer’s premium).

An Andy Warhol 1975 screenprint on paper of the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger blew past its $50,000-$80,000 estimate to land at $110,000 ($137,500 with buyer’s premium). The artwork is signed in pencil by Warhol and in felt-tip pen by Jagger, and is number 204 of a 250 (plus 50 artist proofs) edition.

The timepiece segment of the sale was dominated by what was called a “rare and fine” Aaron Dodd Crane carousel year-going astronomical clock. Manufactured by Boston Clock Company around 1850, the gilt frame on marble base appears to be in nearly perfect original condition. Vintage Bakelite radios were an interesting inclusion in the sale, and without exception, all did very well. The top-selling Bakelite lot of the day was a circa-1941 Motorola Aero-Vane Model no. 51×16 table radio. Estimated at $500-$800, it hammered for $3,500 ($4,375 with buyer’s premium).

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. – A trio of exceptional Tiffany Studios pieces known as ‘paperweight’ vases flew past expectations at The Benefit Shop Foundation‘s September 27 Red Carpet Auction.

Like many of the best objects in this sale, they traced their provenance to the family of Byron DeWitt Miller (1875-1960) – the errand boy from Portland, Maine who became the president of Woolworth.

It was under the aegis of Louis Comfort Tiffany that the Tiffany Studios began exhibiting ‘paperweight’ objects alongside other elements of the favrile glass range around 1900. Using the hot glass, caning and encasement techniques mastered in 19th-century France, in the first two decades of the new century Tiffany’s artists pushed the medium further to create new effects. A series of ‘paperweight’ botanical vases that appeared to trap flowers and water within the glass became the signature product.

The three vases offered on September 27 – all signed, numbered and retaining original paper labels to the base – represented a good cross section of the paperweight medium. And, with estimates in the hundreds, they attracted more than 100 admirers each on the LiveAuctioneers platform. Ultimately, all three sold to internet bidders at the sort of five-figure sums similar pieces have commanded at sales in Manhattan.

The largest, at 8in high, was worked with a design of stylized poppies. It hammered for $16,000 ($20,640 including buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $200-$500. Sold at $11,000 ($14,190 with buyer’s premium) against a similar estimate was a 5in squat form vase with marbled botanical leaf and vine decoration, while a particularly sophisticated vase with red and marbled green tomato vine decoration brought $21,000 ($27,090 with buyer’s premium).

A fourth Tiffany favrile glass vase demonstrated a different, but again, scarce form of decoration of the type popularized by the glassmakers of Nancy, France. The 8in cameo vase in a dark red and yellow opaque glass carved as a floral bloom sold at $4,000 ($5,160 with buyer’s premium).

Byron DeWitt Miller had the ultimate retailing career, climbing from the bottom to the top of the ladder to become president of the world’s largest variety store chain. His big break came in 1908, when he was chosen by Frank W. Woolworth to launch the firm’s first transatlantic stores.

Between 1909-20 — around the time these vases were made — Miller was involved in the creation of more than 80 Woolworth stores across the UK. His first openings in 1912 were in Brixton (which he considered to be the British equivalent of Brooklyn, New York), and in Bristol (which he compared to Atlantic City, New Jersey). He became the third president of the company in 1930.

Like many industrialists of the pre-war era, Miller was an ardent collector of American, European and Oriental works of art. Other items from the estate were offered by The Benefit Shop in 2021, when several Chinese works of art flew to big numbers.

Much the same happened again in September. Occasionally the cataloging left something to be desired, but frequently the bidding did not. A Qing double-lozenge jardiniere and tray decorated with auspicious symbols in the famille rose palette was described simply as ‘a Chinese chinoiserie porcelain flowerpot.’ Estimated at $100-$200, it hammered for $43,000 ($55,470 with buyer’s premium). These were unmarked but almost certainly made in the later years of the Qing dynasty. Jardinieres and trays for growing narcissus bulbs were popular in the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods.

Described only as a ‘molded amber sculpture on a stand’ was an amber brush washer carved in the form of a lotus flower. The quintessential Qing scholar’s object and a rarity in amber, it took $10,000 ($12.900 with buyer’s premium) from an internet bidder via Live Auctioneers against an estimate of $40-$90.

NEW YORK — An Ivan Da Silva Bruhns rug from the estate of Sire Records founder and art collector Seymour Stein outperformed expectations at Capsule Auctions’ Art & Design event on September 27. The complete auction results are available for review at LiveAuctioneers.

Bruhns (1881-1980) was a French-Brazilian artist who was largely self-taught in the art of rug-making, disassembling Oriental examples to study the methods of hand-knotting that he would ultimately incorporate into his designs.

This rug, measuring roughly 3ft by 5ft, was estimated at $5,000-$8,000 but ultimately hammered at $24,000 ($31,200 with buyer’s premium) after dozens of bids from the floor and the internet.

Well cared-for lamps from Tiffany Studios are always strong performers, as Capsule bidders demonstrated with their pursuit of a 10-light Lily table lamp. Estimated at $5,000-$7,000, it sold for a respectable $11,500 ($14,950 with buyer’s premium) after a lengthy bidding battle.

Founded in 1898 and still family-run, Gracie Studio is an American manufacturer of wallpaper and fine furniture with a focus on nature – such as plants or vines incorporated into the designs. Two chinoiserie folding screens with garden scenes sold well above their estimates of $400-$600, hitting $3,800 ($4,940 with buyer’s premium) and $3,600 ($4,680 with buyer’s premium), respectively.

Interestingly, one of the top lots of the sale, a Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) Viasge et Hibou (A.R. 407) owl earthenware vase from his Madoura partnership, passed after not meeting the reserve. It had been estimated at $25,000-$30,000.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Bidders came for the antique lighting at Fontaine’s Fine & Decorative Arts sale September 23-24, sending numerous Tiffany lamps well above their estimates. Complete results can now be viewed for September 23 and September 24 at LiveAuctioneers.

With 24 lamps in the sale, some were bound to skyrocket, and that’s exactly what happened. A circa-1905 Tiffany Studios Acorn table lamp, estimated at $18,000-$22,000, saw determined bidding take it to $30,000 ($37,800 with buyer’s premium).

The first lot of day 1 was a Tiffany Studios Pansy table lamp from a private Cleveland collection. The circa-1905 lot made $37,500 ($47,250 with buyer’s premium), cresting its top estimate of $35,000.

The leading Tiffany lamp lot was a Curtain Border floor lamp standing 79in in height and dating to 1910. Sourced from a private Baltimore collection, it sold at mid-estimate at $65,000 ($81,900 with buyer’s premium).

The sale’s top lot — as predicted — was the English tall-case clock featuring Dick Whittington and his cat. No stranger to auctions, the clock had previously sold for $300,000 in 2008, but shifting buying patterns delivered the lot directly into the middle of its estimate ($60,000-$80,000), hammering at $75,000 ($94,500 with buyer’s premium).

Fontaine also included a Birger Sandzen (1871-1954) oil on canvas that had been a gift of the artist to the Lyons (Kansas) Unified School District upon its completion in 1935. Between Showers just hit its bottom estimate, selling for $50,000 ($63,000 with buyer’s premium).

DALLAS — Heritage Auctions explores the creative bonds between American and French designers during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods with Pursuit of Beauty, a 475-lot event featuring the biggest names in period design on Thursday, October 26. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

In the early 1900s, the United States and France were both at the top of their design games, with Tiffany Studios going head to head with titans such as R. Lalique and Daum. The result was a stunning array of objects that now fascinate collectors worldwide.

“I am, along with Nick Dawes, Heritage’s senior vice president of special collections, honored to present our third Pursuit of Beauty auction of 2023 — our most successful year to date,” said Heritage’s Director of Decorative Arts and Design Samantha Robinson. “This auction features a wide variety of fresh-to-market treasures drawn primarily from private collections and estates.”

From the American side comes this beautiful circa-1905 Tiffany Studios leaded glass and patinated bronze jeweled geometric table lamp. Both its shade and base are accented with matching rows of blue favrile “jewels” — iridescent cabochons that evoke blue, gray and black sea pearls. It is estimated at $60,000-$80,000.

Beyond lamps, Tiffany Studios also pursued art glass, such as this circa-1899 Cypriote favrile glass vase, produced immediately before the firm’s Grand Prix-winning presentation at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Cypriote glass was inspired by ancient Cyprian glass artifacts excavated by Luigi Palma di Cesnola in the 1860s, with the bubbled and pockmarked texture characteristic of the Tiffany Studios line. It carries an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.

Heritage’s entries from France are equally impressive. A Cinq Chevaux mascot, aka hood ornament from René Lalique, a design from circa 1925, is a stunning example of Art Deco, featuring five rearing horses in clear glass. It is estimated at $7,000-$9,000.

An R. Lalique electric blue glass Poissons vase, its design dating to circa 1921, is in nearly perfect original condition and comes from a Bel Air, California estate. It is estimated at $12,000-$16,000.

NEW YORK — A vase made during the Pablo Picasso-Madoura ceramic works partnership in Vallauris, France comes to market at Capsule Auctions‘ Art and Design auction on Wednesday, September 27. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Picasso (1881-1973) first discovered Madoura pottery during a 1946 art exhibition in Vallauris. He met the owners, Suzanne and Georges Ramié, who invited him to their facility. Before long, a partnership bloomed and Picasso ceramics streamed out of Madoura — by some estimates, more than 9,000 pieces.

So desirable are Picasso-Madoura ceramics that a Christie’s South Kensington sale in 2012 brought an incredible $12,584,141 from just 500-odd lots that came directly from the Madoura works.

Capsule’s example features Picasso’s trademark owl design, is titled Viasge et Hibou (Face and Owl), is marked “Edition Picasso / Madoura” and carries number 114 from a 200-piece edition. Standing 9.5in in height and with provenance from a collection at The Beekman, New York, it has an estimate of $25,000-$30,000.

Fresh from an East Hampton collection is a circa-1910 Tiffany Studios 10-light Lily table lamp. Made with favrile glass and bronze, its eight shades are marked “L.C.T. Favrile” and the base is impressed “TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/381.” It is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

High-style Modernism is also a part of the Capsule sale. A pair of Tommi Parzinger brass table lamps with linen shades in generally good condition is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

GENESEO, N.Y. — A lifetime of public service and private collecting come to light with the auction of the Hugh Douglas Barclay (1932-2021) estate by Cottone Auctions on Friday, September 29 and Saturday, September 30. Bidding is now available at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2).

Barclay was an attorney in upstate New York and entered politics in 1965, serving as a New York state senator until 1984. Having worked as a board member for an organization owned by President George H. W. Bush, Barclay was eventually appointed ambassador to El Salvador by President George W. Bush, serving from late 2003 until 2006.

The Barclay collection dominates Day 1 of the sale and includes a large selection of silver items, historic Americana and other objects found in a well-appointed home. This Paul Storr (London, 1819) set of George III silver wine coolers, liners and stands is in remarkable condition, and carries an estimate of $50,000-$80,000.

Perfect for any dinner setting, the Barclay collection also includes two Georg Jensen five-light candelabras from the 1925-1932 period and weighing 408 troy ounces. They are estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

Day 1 expands beyond the Barclay estate to include nearly 40 Tiffany Studios items, mostly the highly sought-after table lamps. A circa-1915 Tiffany Studios dichroic Jeweled Dragonfly table lamp with the Pony Tree Trunk base is an example of the fine quality found in this group. It is estimated at $50,000-$80,000.

Day 2 is dominated by clocks and timepieces. A leading example is a circa-1850 Aaron Dodd Crane carousel year-going astronomical timepiece from the Boston Clock Company. With a gilt frame on a marble base and wonderful action, it is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.
