Colin Middleton’s ‘K Knitting’ leads our five lots to watch

Colin Middleton, ‘K Knitting’, estimated at €15,000-€20,000 ($16,360-$21,815) at Adam’s Auctioneers.

Colin Middleton, ‘K Knitting

DUBLIN – This oil by Irish artist Colin Middleton (1910-1983), titled K Knitting, was exhibited in Belfast in January 1961. It is one of a series of works Middleton started painting in the late 1950s depicting his wife, Kathleen, in domestic situations. The flattened picture space and geometric division recalls Middleton’s training and work as a damask designer. At Adam’s Wednesday, March 27 auction titled Important Irish Art, it has an estimate of €15,000-€20,000 ($16,360-$21,815).

Bulova Accutron Spaceview Wristwatch

Vintage 14K gold Bulova Accutron Spaceview wristwatch, estimated at $200-$400 at Turner Auctions + Appraisals.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Introduced in 1960, the Bulova Accutron 214 was among the first commercially successful electronic watches. Rather than a typical balance wheel, it used a tuning fork (visible in the open-work dial) powered by a one-transistor electronic oscillator and a 1.55v battery – delivering an oscillating rate nearly 150 times faster than that of a typical mechanical watch. It was nicknamed the Spaceview for its green color scheme and what was called its ‘circuit board’ dial.

A new ‘heritage’ version of this watch came out a couple of years ago, but it is still possible to buy an original for less. This 14K gold example from circa 1965 has an estimate of $200-$400 in Turner Auctions + Appraisals’ sale of a single-owner collection of vintage wristwatches on Sunday, March 24. Vintage Watches: One Man’s Collection features more than 140 predominantly mid-century timepieces from a private collection in Northern California.

Ava Gardner’s passport, first issued in October 1966, estimated at $1,000-$1,500 at Leonard Auction.

ADDISON, Ill. – As Ava Gardner (1922-1990) lived her last 35 years outside of the United States, moving first to Spain in 1955 and then to London in 1968, her U.S. passport was in regular use. Issued in October 1966 and later renewed at the U.S. Consul in London, it lists her full name as Ava Lavina Gardner, her birthplace as North Carolina, and documents her brown hair and green eyes. Numerous immigration stamps record regular travel to New York and Los Angeles in the late 1960s.

Offered together with a signed publicity photograph from the 1950s, the clipped passport will be offered at Leonard Auction’s Sunday, March 24 Online Auction from an estate in Chicago. It is estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

The handsome wooden steed is part of the Thursday, March 28 Collections and Estates Auction at Vallot Auctioneers. The owners acquired it from an auction in Detroit in 1990. It is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

PHILADELPHIA — Two important tracts from the American Revolutionary War performed at or above expectations, while a 1549 first edition of Agricola’s study of subterranean creatures topped all lots at Freeman’s Book and Manuscripts sale September 27. Complete sale results are ready for review at LiveAuctioneers.

Printed in 1781 by Francis Bailey by order of the newly formed United States Congress, this pamphlet contains The Constitutions of the Several Independent States of America; The Declaration of Independence; The Articles of Confederation Between the Said States. With only 200 copies printed under the Congressional order, this document is exceedingly rare. Estimated at $7,000-$10,000, it hammered for $24,000 ($31,440 with buyer’s premium).

Another Revolutionary War-era tract, Common Sense by Thomas Paine, just beat its lower $15,000 estimate to sell for $16,000 ($20,960 with buyer’s premium).

The sale’s top lot was a 1549 first edition of De animantibus subterraneis liber by Georgius Agricola (Georg Bauer). Not commonly seen at auction, Freeman’s reported this to be the first copy they could find in more than 45 years of worldwide sales. Estimated at $1,500-$2,500, it sold well above its estimate for $30,000 ($39,300 with buyer’s premium).

Two Toulouse-Lautrec posters printed in 1892 had wildly divergent performances. Aristide Bruant sold mid-estimate at $24,000 ($31,440 with buyer’s premium), while Reine de Joie didn’t make its lower estimate of $8,000, hammering at $7,500 ($9,825 with buyer’s premium).

OAKLAND, Calif. — A textbook oil by the French Impressionist Henry Moret (1856-1913) leads the field at Clars Auction Gallery this week. The Dutch coastal scene dating to the year 1900 has an estimate of $50,000-$70,000 and is part of a two-day series set for Thursday, September 14 and Friday, September 15 (Day 1, Day 2).

Moret is best known for his involvement in the Pont-Aven artist colony and his richly colored landscapes of Brittany. He enjoyed a particularly fruitful relationship with the influential dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who maintained a number of galleries in Paris, London and New York and sold an estimated 600 paintings this way.

Moret only infrequently traveled away from Pont-Aven, but a number of his works dated 1900 depict Holland. Maisons à Volendam, Hollande is a strong example of his bold palette choices and forceful and short brushstrokes, a style he credited much to Claude Monet.

From the other end of the 20th century is a late work by Andy Warhol (1928-1987). Sitting Bull, derived from an archival photo of the Sioux chief, was originally part of the Pop artist’s Cowboys and Indians portfolio completed in 1986, but was later replaced by another subject. There was no published edition. It is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

The Fall Modern + Contemporary Art Auction on September 14 features prints by a number of blue-chip names including Francis Bacon, Salvador Dali, Wayne Thiebaud and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Leading a fine selection of 20th-century photographs is Fayel Tall by artist and writer Peter Beard (1938–2020). This 1995 image of the Kenyan model posing in a mudcloth skirt relates to The End of the Game, the photo book documenting the issues facing wildlife in Kenya that brought him fame in the 1960s. An inscription on the left of the photograph quotes a passage from book. The unique gelatin silver print has an estimate of $20,000-$40,000.

The following day’s Collectors Auction includes one of the famous elephant folio prints from John James Audubon’s The Birds of America. Canvas Backed Ducks or Fuligula vallisneria formed part of the classic 1836 Robert Havell edition and carries the watermark for J Whatman Turkey Mill. It is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.
