SAN FRANCISCO – Turner Auctions + Appraisals will present the Grace Garcia Estate, Part 2 sale on Sunday, June 26. It features an extensive array of religious items, fine and decorative arts and collectibles from the personal collection of the late Grace Garcia, who owned Gilroy Antiques in Gilroy, California for more than 30 years. The auction lineup also includes several lots from other collectors, chief among them paintings by William Russell Flint and Mauritz Frederik Hendrich de Haas, and groupings of character dolls and costume figures. WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – That swaggering, wisecracking cartoon sailor Popeye has been depicted on countless toys and memorabilia since first appearing in the Thimble Theatre comic strip in 1929. With his spinach-powered superhuman strength, he was an immediate hit with readers of all ages, gaining an even higher level of visibility in his own cartoon series that launched in 1933. Ever since his debut, Popeye – with his girlfriend Olive Oyl and their motley crew of sidekicks in tow – has been an entertaining figure in the public’s consciousness, and vintage toys designed with Popeye’s image have only continued to rise in popularity and price.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – Stephen Turner, founder of Turner Auctions + Appraisals, hails from Canada and spent the early years of his career in the auction business working as an appraiser and specialist with auction houses in Vancouver and Victoria. After relocating to San Francisco in 1991, he worked for Butterfield & Butterfield, one of the country’s oldest auction houses, before and after it was acquired by eBay and then Bonhams. In 2004, Turner opened an auction and appraisal consulting firm, and, seven years ago, the company began hosting online-only auctions. His namesake firm specializes in fine arts, decorative arts, Asian and Southwest arts, toys, photography and prints, jewelry, militaria and books and manuscripts. SAN FRANCISCO – Turner Auctions + Appraisals is pleased to present the Holbrook T. Mitchell Collection of Books & Manuscripts on January 29. Drawn from the estate of a Northern California collector, the auction features 85 lots of antique or vintage written works in various languages from the 14th-20th centuries. Highlights include an illuminated 19th-century Persian Qu’ran (Koran) in Arabic; a book from the library of Marie Louise, Duchess of Parma, the second wife of Napoleon; a 1781 copy of Cook’s Voyages Around the World by G. W. Anderson; 11 Egyptian papyrus fragments, likely all from a single leaf; and an 1885 first edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
