Disney theme park items performed beyond expectations at Van Eaton

Columbia Pictures one-sheet for the 1929 short 'Barnyard Battles,' which sold for $18,000 ($21,780 with buyer’s premium) at Van Eaton.

STUDIO CITY, Calif. — Anticipated high lots underperformed and surprise lots overperformed wildly at Van Eaton GalleriesDisney Studio and Disney Parks Live Auction on March 2. The sale’s overall outcome demonstrated the ongoing demand for official Disney memorabilia, and it seems that the more obscure it is, the better. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Many of the top-estimated lots merely hit their low estimates, such as the Mary Blair concept painting for It’s A Small World at Disneyland, which realized $20,000 ($24,200 with buyer’s premium). In a rare instance, a Disneyland Haunted Mansion stretching portrait, estimated at $100,000-$150,000, passed.

Probably to the surprise of Van Eaton, the top lot was an early 2000s metal Disneyland resort transportation sign identifying a back of house shuttle stop that transported cast members from the entrance at Harbor Pointe to various other stops. Estimated at $300-$500, it hammered for a whopping $22,500 ($27,225 with buyer’s premium).

An original Columbia Pictures one-sheet for Barnyard Battles, a 1929 film short featuring Mickey Mouse, also exceeded its $9,000-$12,000 estimate by hammering for $18,000 ($21,780 with buyer’s premium). Van Eaton notes that pre-United Artists Disney posters are scarce, and this example is believed to be from 1930, after animator and director Ub Iwerks, whose name would normally appear on early Disney posters, left Disney.

A large-format (34 by 36in) area closure sign featuring Tinker Bell also blew out expectations. Annual Cleaning and Pixie Dusting was estimated at $300-$500 but sold for an outstanding $6,000 ($7,260 with buyer’s premium).

Robert Olszewski (b. 1945-) is a renowned miniaturist who has worked for Walt Disney Company, the Franklin Mint, Goebel, and many others. A collector commissioned a scale model of Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean building complex with incredible detail and an illuminated ‘interior view’ showing the bride auction and ship battle scenes. Once again moderately estimated at $300-$500, it hammered for $6,500 ($7,865 with buyer’s premium).

Disney theme park and studio animation artifacts return to Van Eaton March 2

Original production cels for Tramp and Lady from 'Lady And The Tramp,' estimated at $5,000-$7,000 at Van Eaton.

STUDIO CITY, Calif. — More than 800 lots of theme park and studio animation artifacts from 100 years of Disney history return to Van Eaton Galleries in its first sale of 2024, slated for Saturday, March 2. The complete catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Mary Blair (1911-1978) was an early woman animation pioneer, working at MGM, Ub Iwerks, and ultimately Walt Disney Productions, where she served as a concept artist helping to capture the ‘right look’ for both animated features as well as the later theme park displays. Van Eaton has four of her original concept paintings, including the design for the It’s A Small World attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The acrylic on board measures 20 by 15in and is dated to 1965. It carries an estimate of $20,000-$25,000.

More than 70 original production animation cels are included in the sale. The top-estimated lot of this group is a matched set of Tramp and Lady from the memorable Bella Notte sequence of Walt Disney’s 1955 release Lady and the Tramp. Originally sold at the Art Corner in Disneyland, they have been trimmed and professionally restored and are together estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

First opened in 1969, Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion provides a chillingly fun experience from the moment the ride begins. This ‘stretching’ portrait is an original artwork painted by Disney Imagineer Marc Davis, where the first third is visible and the remainder reveals as the elevator descends to the ride cart platform below ground level. Highly prized by Disneyland collectors, this original is estimated at $100,000-$150,000.

Original audio-animatronic birds from Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room, which first opened in 1963, are exceedingly rare. This example has been restored to full operational order by Disney artisan Kevin Kidney, and it is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Production drawings are a great entry-level area for Disney collectors, and this sale has some from Disney’s earliest days. 1928’s Steamboat Willie was the animated short that transformed Disney from a small independent studio into the entertainment monolith it is today. This original production drawing from the short is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

STUDIO CITY, Calif. — Disneyana is one of the most passionate and enduring of all 20th-century collecting categories. Whether the interest is in motion pictures, television programs, or the parks themselves, the realm of Disney collectibles has literally something for everyone.

Van Eaton Galleries has assembled a monumental two-day event for Saturday, November 11 and Sunday, November 12 dominated by Disney-related items, many of them from that most elusive of categories: park-related material. Because the Disney organization has traditionally been loathe to sell off park-related items (instead opting to retire things quietly), collecting examples from Disneyland or Walt Disney World can represent a great challenge. The catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2).

Rarely seen at auction are park-worn costumes used by Disney employees to entertain guests and pose for pictures with them. Two lots of walkaround costume heads and a head with full costume appear in the sale, including a 1970s Walt Disney World Goofy head, estimated at $15,000-$20,000; a 1978 Walt Disney World Mickey Mouse head, estimated at $15,000-$20,000; and a 2005 Disneyland Queen of Hearts full costume that is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

Themed food concessions are a core element of any Disney park experience. A 1990s Walt Disney World ice cream cart decorated with images of Uncle Scrooge’s three nephews from Duckburg — Huey, Dewey and Louie — is in good, used condition and is 6ft in length. It carries an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

Charles Boyer (1935-2021) began his career as a pastel artist at Disneyland in 1960, and would go on to create Disneyland-themed artworks for 39 years. Disneyland Main Gate is believed to have been painted in the 1980s or 1990s and represents a recently-opened park welcoming a family on their first visit. It is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

NEW YORK (AP) – When The Edge saw the Rolling Stones perform recently, his mask allowed him to go unrecognized as he watched guitarist Ron Wood from the front row. “I have to say one of the benefits of mask wearing is it’s like a cloaking device if you’re a famous face,” the U2 guitarist recently told The Associated Press while promoting his Music Rising charity and its Dec. 11 auction of famous guitars and other rock memorabilia to support New Orleans musicians hit hard by the pandemic.
