ATLANTA – Vivid and colorful oil on canvas paintings by Syd Solomon (American, 1917-2004) and Henri Hecht Maik (French, 1922-1993) each brought $20,000, while a classical early 20th-century Continental School marble sculpture of a woman finished at $21,250 in Ahlers & Ogletree’s two-day, two-session Spring Estates & Collections auction, held April 9 and 10.

BEACHWOOD, Ohio – Two bronze statues by American sculptor Frederick William MacMonnies (1863-1937) sold for a combined $39,360, a monumental landscape painting by George Hetzel (French and American, 1826-1899) rose to $22,140, and a massive baluster-form vase cast with the face of a woman by Paul Francois Berthoud (French, 1870-1939) brought $13,530 in Neue Auctions’ English & Chinese Export Art & Antiques auction held March 26.

Choices include an early 18th-century Huguenot brass wine cooler; a circa-1850s red and green coxcomb quilt; a circa-1770 mahogany Rhode Island side chair with open work splat and stop fluted legs; a late 17th-century London delft octagonal plate depicting William and Mary; a pair of horse head cast iron finials; and an 1828 needlework sampler from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The 292 lots in the sale are, as always, curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert on tramp art, folk art, and Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
