NEW YORK – The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum today announced that Under the Same Sun: Art from Latin America Today, the second exhibition of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative (MAP), will travel to the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) in São Paulo, Brazil from April to June, 2015 and the Museo Jumex in Mexico City, Mexico in the fall of 2015, following its presentation at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum from June 13 to October 1, 2014.

Organized by Pablo León de la Barra, Guggenheim UBS MAP Curator, Latin America, Under the Same Sun examines the most significant contemporary art practices in Latin America today. The Museu de Arte Moderna is one of the leading modern and contemporary art museums in Brazil, and it has been a pioneer in education in museums in the country. The Museo Jumex is part of the Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, which was created to promote the production, analysis and research of contemporary art, and to generate new ways to support art and culture.

Richard Armstrong, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, stated: “We are very pleased to be working with two very distinguished institutions on the second phase of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative: the Museu de Arte Moderna in São Paolo and the Museo Jumex in Mexico City, Mexico. The great strength of this multi-faceted collaboration, which was launched in April 2012 with the generous support of our collaborator UBS, is that it enables us to go beyond the walls of our museums and engage with artists, curators, educators and the public across a vast part of the world, including Latin America.”

Milú Villela, President of the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, declared: “We are honored to receive the new collection of Latin American art from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, which will offer a contemporary reflection on our regional culture to the Brazilian public. Collaborating with an institution of such global relevance as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum will also bring new perspectives on the educational activities in museums, which is a fundamental aspect of our mission.”

Patrick Charpenel, Director of the Museo Jumex stated: “For Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo, it is particularly important to present a project concerning Latin American art at Museo Jumex. Through theleadership of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum and the broad vision of Pablo León de laBarra, Guggenheim UBS MAP Curator, Latin America, the MAP initiative is launching a program of activities that will increase dialogue among cultural agents in Central and South America.”

The New York presentation of Under the Same Sun features nearly 50 contemporary works by 40 artists and collaborative duos representing 15 countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico (United States), Uruguay, and Venezuela. These works have been acquired by the Guggenheim under the auspices of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Purchase Fund.

For each of the presentations at MAM and Museo Jumex, Pablo León de la Barra and the Guggenheim team will collaborate with museum staff to customize the exhibition for the local audiences. In addition, education leaders from each institution will work together to create tailored materials for the public and students, both at the museum and online.

Under the Same Sun: Art from Latin America Today is organized by Pablo León de la Barra, Guggenheim UBS MAP Curator, Latin America. Nancy Spector, Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, New York, and Joan Young, Director of Curatorial Affairs, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, provide curatorial oversight for the entire initiative.

Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative is a collaboration between the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the financial services firm UBS.

About Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative:

Inaugurated in April 2012, the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative is a multi-year collaboration that charts contemporary art practice in three geographic regions—South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa—and encompasses curatorial residencies, international touring exhibitions, audience-driven education programming, and acquisitions for the Guggenheim’s permanent collection. All works have been newly acquired for the Guggenheim’s collection under the auspices of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Purchase Fund. The initiative builds upon and reflects the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation’s distinguished history of internationalism and significantly increases the Guggenheim’s holdings of art from these dynamic communities.
