PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The only known mural painted by Maurice Sendak will be on display at a new public library branch in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports The Chertoff Mural is being installed in the library set to open on the first floor of a wellness center in south Philadelphia.

The children’s author painted it in 1961 for the children of his friends Lionel and Roslyn Chertoff, in their New York City apartment.

The mural depicts a white terrier leading a parade of characters including a drummer boy, a bugler, a lion, a girl and a bear.

The Cheroff’s children donated it to Philadelphia’s Rosenbach Museum and Library in 2008. It’s a subsidiary of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

The mural will be on public view starting June 11.

Sendak, who died in 2012, is best known for his classic book Where the Wild Things Are.
