LEWISTON, Maine (AP) – The twin cities of Lewiston-Auburn represent one of six sites to be selected for murals honoring the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage.
The Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts led the effort to produce murals marking the centennial of the 19th Amendment, which secured women’s right to vote.
The program provides $25,000 to each of the nation’s six regional arts organizations that together represent all 50 states and U.S. territories. Some murals have already been completed.
The Maine Arts Commission was awarded the grant for the New England, and the panel decided to put the mural in Lewiston-Auburn. Several sites are under consideration in the two cities.
