PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (AP) – An upstate group is raising money to commission a western New York native to create a mural commemorating the upcoming bicentennial of the Battle of Plattsburgh.

The Press-Republican of Plattsburgh reports that the Battle of Plattsburgh Association has launched a campaign to raise $100,000 for the mural, which will be created by Dean Mosher, a Niagara Falls native who’s a nationally renowned historical artist.

Mosher’s work hangs in such places as the U.S. Naval and Coast Guard academies and the State University of Plattsburgh’s art museum.

The War of 1812 battle was fought on Sept. 11, 1814, on land and on Lake Champlain at Plattsburgh, where American ground and naval forces defeated an invading British army and navy.

Mosher lives in Fairhope, Ala., outside Mobile.
