PROVINCETOWN, Mass. – This September, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum presents a mid-career survey of paintings by Hilda Neily, curated by artist Midge Battelle. Opening with a free public reception on Friday, Sept. 4, at 8 p.m. Eastern, this exhibition is on view through Nov. 8.

The public is invited to a gallery talk with Neily and Battelle as part of the museum’s Fredi Schiff Levin lecture series on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. (general admission $10, free for PAAM members).

Born in Vermont and a resident of Provincetown since 1968, Hilda Neily studied various theories of painting before developing a strong interest in plein air impressionist painting. This interest led her to study for 15 years at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown with Henry Hensche – the master impressionist who studied with and served as assistant to the painter Charles Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art.

Today Neily is a master painter in her own right, and is considered to be one of the Cape School’s most adept practitioners. Neily’s paintings are included in private, corporate and museum collections throughout the U.S. and abroad. In Provincetown she teaches at the Cape School of Art and is represented by the Hilda Neily Gallery.

Curator Midge Battelle received a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston. She has been a member of the Provincetown arts community since 1992-as an artist, teacher, curator and gallery manager. A painter, photographer and mixed-media artist, her work has been exhibited widely and is in numerous public and private collections. Battelle resides in Provincetown and currently serves on PAAM’s Exhibition Committee.
