CHICAGO – A special exhibition, and the first in over 40 years in Chicago to include a major work by Tony Smith (American, 1912-1980), will be presented May 6-20 at Wright gallery. The exhibition is produced in association with Valerie Carberry Gallery.

A sleek mass in painted steel, Smith’s 1964 artwork titled Wall achieves harmony in concept and form. “Smith frees Wall from its architectural function as divider or barrier and creates a stand-alone object that celebrates our relationship to pure form: a sublime viewing experience on a human scale,” says a statement from Wright.

Tony Smith is best known for his large modular sculptures in black painted steel created in the 1960s and ’70s. Frequently described in the context of Minimalism, Smith’s elegant and powerful contribution to 20th century sculpture is represented in the collection of virtually every major American museum, including MoMA, the Met, the Smithsonian, the Whitney, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Walker, to name but a few.

Wall will be on view at Wright, 1440 W. Hubbard St., Chicago, from May 6-20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. An opening reception is planned for Thursday, May 5, from 5-8 p.m.
