PHILADELPHIA — Building on its success in 2020, Freeman’s will continue some of its most celebrated auctions. Philadelphia’s auction house has announced a wide range of auctions starting in early 2021 and continuing into the summer.

Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings, 20th-century American furniture and other categories synonymous with Freeman’s are represented on the calendar.

From Europe to Asia

White Interior  by Viennese Secessionist Carl Moll will anchor the European Art & Old Masters sale (Feb. 23). This tranquil interior scene by Moll was only recently rediscovered. Other exceptional pieces include a rare oil by Czech artist Jakub Schikaneder, a black chalk drawing by Gustav Klimt and a still-life with roses by Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Collectors at all levels looking for further European inspiration will get their wish just two days later. The European Lifestyle auction on Feb. 25 will showcase both fine and decorative art, as well as furniture, from Europe throughout the centuries.

Cross continents again with Freeman’s Asian Arts sale April 8. A meiping, or Chinese plum vase, produced during the reign of Yongzheng will highlight the sale. Collectors of Chinese vases will also want to mark a Longquan celadon vase dating back to the Ming Dynasty.

American art across disciplines

Freeman’s will continue its celebration of American artists and furniture makers from the Colonial era to the 20th century. This year, the lineup of sales will include the American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts auction on April 27.

Then, in the summer, collectors will have the opportunity to browse a wealth of paintings by Pennsylvania Impressionists. The American Art & Pennsylvania Impressionists sale on June 6 will present these works and other pieces by icons of the American 20th century.

Modern & contemporary art and design

Exceptional modern furniture and 20th-century fine art meet in March 23rd’s Art + Design auction. The sale’s lots will represent the major art movements of the last century, as well as its master craftsmen.

Followed by the Modern & Contemporary Art auction on May 11, which will offer works from around the world by some of the market’s most sought-after artists. Meanwhile, aficionados of studio furniture, ceramics, and glass should take note of Freeman’s Design sale on June 8.

Jewelry & watches

The Luxe: Boutique Jewels auction on March 10 will offer antique and contemporary designs from prominent brands, including Tiffany & Co., Rolex and Cartier. This is the latest in Freeman’s Luxe Sale Series, which brings high-end jewelry and lifestyle objects to beginning and lifelong collectors alike. In May, bidders will have an opportunity to acquire fine jewelry and timepieces from exemplary makers in the Jewelry & Watches sale (May 19).

Books & manuscripts

From comics to historical texts, there’s something for everybody in a Books & Manuscripts auction Feb. 18. The top lot is a first edition copy of Les voyages du sieur de Champlain…, published in 1613. Counter-culture comics, children’s literature, and presidential autographs are just a few of the niches represented. The following Books & Manuscripts sale will present ephemera and books from the collection of Aubrey Beardsley on May 20.
