NEW YORK (ACNI) – The 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II Drophead Coupe known to Elizabeth Taylor’s legion of fans as “The Green Goddess” sold for $520,000 in an evening auction held August 6 at The Pierre Hotel in New York. Guernsey’s conducted the sale onsite at the hotel as an homage to Taylor, who ordered the car for herself while living at The Pierre with then-new-husband Eddie Fisher.

Taylor reportedly chose the Smoke Green custom color for her car not only because green was her favorite color but also because it matched the color of her wedding dress. The luxury vehicle is one of only 20 left-hand-drive Silver Cloud II Drophead Coupes (Convertibles) ever built by Rolls-Royce.

The Academy Award-winning actress kept the car for approximately 20 years, then offered it for sale through an ad in the Wall Street Journal. It was purchased by a West Coast gentleman who fastidiously maintained it for four decades before consigning it to Guernsey’s. Other than its delivery to Elizabeth Taylor in New York, and its appearance in Rome on the set of Cleopatra (where the star met her future husband Richard Burton), the Rolls-Royce spent its entire life in California.

The new owner of the car has chosen to remain anonymous.
