Carter Center raises $800K at annual auction

ATLANTA (AP) – The nation’s tanking economy didn’t stop the Carter Center from raking in more than $800,000 during an auction in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

A painting by former President Jimmy Carter drew the largest bid of $100,000 last weekend. The only baseball in the world signed by five U.S. presidents – Gerald Ford, Carter, George Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – went for $82,500.

A fly fishing trip with the Carters sold for $80,000, and a handmade Manuel Rodriguez classical guitar drew $65,000.

The money raised by auctioning more than 100 high-end items will benefit international humanitarian work done by The Carter Center in Atlanta. The auction raised $1.2 million last year.
