ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer is pushing for federal and state officials to give a special designation to an Albany-area icon.

Nipper, a 28-foot-tall fiberglass black-and-white terrier, has been on top of the former RCA building on Albany’s north end since the 1950s. It’s still known as Nipper the RCA dog, even though the company is long gone.

Schumer was in Albany Monday afternoon to urge the National Park Service and the state Historic Preservation Office to add the property to the National Register of Historic Places. The New York Democrat says the designation would free up federal historic tax credits for redeveloping the building for residential and commercial use.

The four-story building, built about a century ago, is currently owned by a moving and storage company.
