Nebraska doctor donates art-book collection to university

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – A Holdrege doctor who amassed one of the nation’s top private book collections on American art has donated the collection to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries.

Dr. Stuart Embury says he donated the more than 11,000 books and catalogues to his alma mater because he wants to share the collection with the world.

The newly created Stuart P. Embury MD Library of American Art contains primary material and books covering all major and many minor figures in American art.

Embury compiled the books over 40 years, beginning soon after he moved to Holdrege. Buying prints for the walls in his new home led to a thirst for learning more about the artist, which led to the purchasing of reference materials and catalogues.
