NORFOLK, Va. (AP) – The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk is closing for more than a year while it undergoes a $24 million expansion and renovation

The museum hosted a party for the public Wednesday to celebrate the project and thank the community for its support.

Sunday will be the last day that the public can visit the museum. It’s expected to reopen in April 2014.

The museum is storing much of its collection at other sites. But some pieces will be displayed at other outlets. The museum also will continue its art education programs.

Museum director Bill Hennessey told The Virginian-Pilot that the expansion is part of a $45 million capital campaign. The campaign also funded a glass studio and some endowments.
