DENVER (AP) – Members of the family of the late Chinese painter Xu are in Denver for the opening of the first exhibit of his work at a U.S. museum.

The Denver Art Museum exhibit opened Sunday.

The artist’s daughter Xu Fangfang says her father was preparing in 1941 to show his work in the United States, but World War II prevented it from happening.

Xu Beihong was friends with the father of Starz Entertainment Group founder John Sie, who is on the Denver Art Museum’s board of trustees. Sie’s father was a Chinese cultural ambassador in Europe.

Xu Beihong, who died in 1953 at the age of 58, blended Chinese and European painting traditions. He is perhaps best known for his paintings of horses. One of his works sold for more than $8 million in 2007.
