Museum opens building to display George Ohr pottery

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) – The museum honoring the artist known as the Mad Potter of Biloxi has opened a twisted building created to house his work.

The building opened Saturday. It’s among four small “pods” at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, named for potter George Ohr and a major donor’s late wife. It holds 35 pieces by Ohr.

A larger building, the four-story City of Biloxi Center for Ceramics opened in 2012. Museum executive director Kevin O’Brien says architect Frank Gehry designed it and the four smaller buildings to resemble Ohr’s pottery. Three “pods” are still unfinished.

The museum was being built when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, forcing work to start over.
