New frame to cap off Bierstadt’s ‘Mount Whitney’

CORNING, N.Y. (AP) – A painting that’s the centerpiece of an upstate New York museum’s collection of Western artwork is getting a new frame weighing in at 450 pounds.
Officials at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art say Albert Bierstadt’s Mount Whitney is being refitted with a replica of a 1870s American frame. The frame measuring nearly 8 feet wide was transported by truck from Manhattan to the museum in Corning.
Workers used a crane to lift the frame three stories into the museum Wednesday morning. They removed the painting from the wall and expected to have the new frame installed later Wednesday.
Bierstadt’s landscape from around 1877 has served as the focus of the Rockwell Museum’s collection since the 1980s. In 2011, it was determined that the painting’s frame was deteriorating and needed to be replaced.
