NY State Museum opens vintage Shaker photo exhibit

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ There’s a new exhibit featuring Shaker photographs at the New York State Museum in Albany.

The exhibit which opened this weekend features more than 100 photos from the Works Progress Administration of the Great Depression.

Photographs by Noel Vicentini document Shaker sites, architecture, craft and people. Vicentini was among many WPA artists sent to document the Shakers during the summer of 1936.

The photo exhibition complements the State Museum’s 7,000-square-foot exhibition, “The Shakers: America’s Quiet Revolutionaries,” which explores the history and culture of the Shakers.

The State Museum calls the Shakers “the most significant communal religious society in American history.” They’re known for their social and technological innovations, decorative arts and design.
