RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – The Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Richmond is launching a fundraising effort to preserve and publish illustrations of the writer’s famous 1845 poem, The Raven.

Museum officials hope to raise $60,000 through the Internet crowdfunding site Kickstarter for the nearly 130-year-old illustrations by English artist James Carling.

Carling sought to put the haunting lines of the poem into stormy and wild imagery that had never been done before.

The 43 intricate drawings were once an important part of the museum’s collection since the 1930s and were on display for 40 years.

But illustrations were glued to cardboard, causing them to darken and deteriorate over the years. Museum officials are looking to safeguard the drawings for generations to come.

The fundraising effort runs through Nov. 15.
