MANSFIELD, La. (AP) – A major renovation at the Mansfield State Historic Site museum began on Monday.

The Times reports the museum will be closed to the public through at least late April.

Renovations include installation of lighting, flooring and wall treatments in preparation for new exhibits about the Civil War battles at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill.

The exhibits will be installed in July and feature artifacts, letters and uniforms. Other themes will include the impact of the war on the lives of local community members, as well as the roles played by women, slaves and freed slaves.

The battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill were significant losses for the Union Army. The Red River remained in Confederate hands until the end of the war.

The Mansfield State Historic Site in northwestern Louisiana commemorates the 1864 Battle of Mansfield. This Civil War battle is considered significant because Confederate troops succeeded in turning back large Union forces, thus preventing the progression of the war into Texas and perhaps delaying the final Southern surrender on April 9, 1865.
