S.D. Indian school breaks ground on $3M museum addition

CHAMBERLAIN, S.D. (AP) – St. Joseph’s Indian School has broken ground on a $3 million museum addition and alumni center.

The Daily Republic reports that the idea for the project started about four years ago when officials knew they needed more climate-controlled space for the Akta Lakota Museum.

St. Joseph’s Executive Director Rev. Stephen Huffstetter says the addition will also feature a medicine wheel garden to promote healing and reconciliation.

The school is working with Split Rock Studios of Minneapolis, which also worked on the McGovern Legacy Museum in Mitchell and the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.

The Akta Lakota Museum opened in the mid-1990s. Huffstetter says it has been a great resource for the students, alumni and local and area school children.
