NEW YORK (AP) – The Staten Island Museum is breaking ground this month on its future home.
The $31 million renovation involves retrofitting a landmarked 19th-century building on the grounds of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden complex. It’s expected to open sometime in 2013.
The museum was established in 1881. It houses artifacts devoted to science, art and local history, and includes insect and botanical specimens, ephemera, paintings and photographs.
It boasts the largest cicada collection in North America.
The groundbreaking is set for March 23.
The museum says another Greek Revival building next door will be renovated in the future.
Its current location, nearby, will be devoted to exhibitions on the Staten Island Ferry.
