NEW YORK – When thieves ravaged the walls of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston on March 18, 1990, they didn’t just steal precious paintings; they stole the attention of the country, and the world. Two individuals dressed in police uniforms spent 81 minutes to gather and abscond with 13 works by Degas, Manet, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and other artists, collectively worth around half a billion dollars.

On April 7, Netflix will premiere This Is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist, a four-part documentary series on the unsolved crime. Director Colin Barnacle is the latest to tackle the tangled story of the Gardner heist, exploring the world of organized crime and interviewing characters such as Myles Connor, Jr., a flamboyant criminal who has come under suspicion despite having an airtight alibi–he was in prison when the art was stolen.

This Is a Robbery examines the nuances of the notorious incident, which remains an active FBI case with an unclaimed $10 million reward for information that leads to the recovery of the missing artworks.
