The Art of the Exquisite Corpse: Collaborative Works on Paper The Surrealist parlor game called le cadavre exquis, or the exquisite corpse, is a collaborative, chanced-based drawing game that results in reassembled, dismembered and distorted composite figures made by multiple artists by hiding each part of the drawing from the next participant as the work progresses. Surrealist artists like Miro, Tanguy and Man Ray all played the game, creating fantastically distorted and juxtaposed figures. In 1993, The Drawing Center in New York City invited contemporary artists to create exquisite corpse works for their exhibition The Return of the Cadavre Exquis. This sale includes sixty-one works made for the Drawing Center show by artists who either chose their partners, or left the collaboration to the center to assign. Famous and lesser-known artists were mixed, as were men and women, nationalities, and mediums. The resulting group of exquisite corpse drawings represent the enthusiasm with which the artists approached the game, and their exploration of issues like the representation of the body, a revived interest in its form, and the mixing of media in many of the works. Artists include Donald Sultan, Leon Golub, Deborah Kass, Peter Halley, Karen Finley, Annette Lemieux, Carroll Dunham, Laurie Simmons, John Wesley, Ashley Bickerton, Marilyn Minter and Tony Oursler.
