Patrick Leonard HRHA

Patrick Leonard HRHA (1918-2005) An Appreciation – Sixty Years of Painting James Adam & Sons will host a major retrospective exhibition and auction of paintings by the recently deceased Dublin artist Patrick Leonard HRHA on Wednesday 26th April. Totalling over 200 works hand-picked from Leonard's personal collection, the retrospective will be an exclusive opportunity for art enthusiasts to view and buy from the artist's most notable works. Ranging in estimate €800-5000 for important oils and large pastels, it encompasses 60 years of painting, starting from Leonard's early harvesting and threshing scenes of the late 30s, to nostalgic beach scenes of north Co. Dublin of the 40s and 50s, and his later unique views on life of the 80s. Commenting on the retrospective and auction, David Britton, Director, James Adam & Sons, said, "Adam's is delighted to be given this opportunity to profile Leonard on such a major scale, as although highly acclaimed throughout his career, he was often obscured in the shadows of the more fashionable 20th century painters. Having worked closely with the artist's estate to select some of the finest examples of Leonard's work, we are confident that this retrospective will consolidate Leonard's position as one of Ireland's most important painters of the late 20th century. "His paintings are vibrant and full of life, and he never compromised on this effervescence to the art buying public, always remaining true to his unique style. He was taught by renowned Irish artists Sean Keating PRHA and Maurice MacGonigal PRHA at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in the late 1930s and as a graduate, his talent was soon recognised by the RHA when they offered him associate membership just a year after his first exhibition with the Academy (1941). "Keating also praised the artist's works, opening Leonard's first solo exhibition at the prestigious Victor Waddington Galleries in 1944 and describing him as 'a man for whom the visible exists. He understands and loves the sea, and paints it with dexterity and poetic insight," he added. Leonard was a full time art teacher starting at Sandford Park School in Ranelagh and later teaching at the Technical School in Killester and Mercy Convent in Coolock. He stopped painting through periods of ill health yet still continued to sketch. "Sketching soon became a real focus for Leonard, where he began to sketch everywhere he went, every minute of the day. He sketched sitting on the train, waiting for a bus, while adjudicating exams and even while waiting in hospital, filling hundreds of sketch books with wonderful observational drawings. These telling sketches, which were later worked into finished oils, are included in the auction among the larger paintings for sale and provide a real insight into the methodology and thoughts of such a great Dublin artist," David concluded.
