Description
1815 1ed Nootka INDIANS Vancouver Pacific Canada John Jewitt Narrative Slaves

John R. Jewitt was a 19th-century English armor maker who is remembered for being taken captive by the native Nootka people in Canada. His Narrative, which was written by Richard Alsop, is one of the best sources regarding the people of the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America. It describes phial appearance of the Nootka people, clothing and jewelry, tribal body paints, feasts and ceremonies, and even slave trade and sex slaves.

According to Field,

“the details of the adventures of Jewett were drawn from Alsop by the indefatigable queries of Also, who after some years declared that he feared he had done Jewett little good, in furnishing him with a vagabond mode of earning a livelihood, by hawking his book from a wheelbarrow through the country. The narrative of Jewett affords us many new and interesting particulars of the life and habits of the most savage of American aborigines. It is probably as faithful a portrayal of them as could be made by an unlettered man, after the lapse of several years. A vocabulary of the Nootka language, containing nearly one hundred words, occupies page 4.
