Description
1842 Hebrew Torah Five Pentacles Parashah Bible Ashkenazi Jew Vilnius Lithuania
By the end 1600s thousands of Ashkenazi Jews were living in northern Europe, most of which were poor immigrants. Throughout the next 100 years, there was a significant growth of the Ashkenazim with numerous synagogues and holy books. This early 19th-century Ashkenazi Hebrew text includes numerous Jewish texts including the Five Pentacles of the Torah, the Parashah with the Pekudei, a translation of the book of Ecclesiastes, and many other texts from the Torah.
This particular tome was published in 1842 in Vilnius, Lithuania while it was under Russian control. Census records indicate that the Jewish population approached nearly half of the population in Vilnius at the time of publication. It would be expected that Hebrew law texts such as this be found in Vilnius during the first half of the 19th-century.
