Description
A BRONZE-GILT SHAKYAMUNI ZANABAZAR
The figure is shown seated in dhyanasana on a lotus base with the right hand extended in bhumisparsamudra and left hand in dhyanamudra holding an offering bowl, and clad in a close-fitting sanghati incised with a foliate-patterned hem that drapes in elegant folds over the left shoulder and fans at the ankles. The face is cast with arched eyebrows and downcast eyes centered by a raised urna, and the hair is dressed in tight curls below the ushnisha. The Zanabazar school of art was founded by Jebtsundamba Khutuktu Zanabazar (1635-1723), a direct descendent of Genghis Khan and one of the most beloved religious leaders and respected master artists of Mongolia. The school is characterized by richly gilded imagery with finely modeled, smoothly sloping contours and precise, often beaded embellishments. Zanabazar possessed an in-depth knowledge of the techniques of casting, decorating and gildingCast as a single form with superbly modeled details and thick, lustrous gilding, Zanabazar school bonzes are hailed as sculptural masterpieces of the period.
Dimension: L. 14 cm. W. 14 cm. H. 20 cm. Weight 2550 grams.
