Description
Prior to the 1848 Revolution, 19th century furniture style was named after Louis-Phillippe d'Orlans, having less ornamentation, carving, gilding, and bronze, and more simple, rounded lines; following the revolution, Napoleon III or Empire style marked a return to grand interiors and expressions of wealth, with high-quality work, an explosion of fine upholstery, and precious materials (especially giltwood). Decorated with rose motifs, surrounded by raised gold foliage, this mounted potpourri is on gilt-bronze mounts and a tripod base. It features a pseudo-Sèvres mark to the underside of the lid.
