Description
Very early Burmese Buddha, probably 11th century or earlier. It is one of the most distinctive early Burmese bronzes I have come across in years. The casting is remarkable in that it is done so incredibly thin while still being done so well. This very thin casting was sometimes done during times when bronze was scarce. It is notable that it is sitting in a position of Royal ease, which signifies that it is likely a Hindu figure rather than a Buddhist figure as this one likely is. The face has echoes of pre-Pagan, Arakan, Early Mon, and even Pyu. My bet is on It being from a Hindu group in early Arkan, but we will see. Let me know if you have any ideas or photos of closely related examples. - 6.75" ( 17.145cm ). Possibly Srivajaya.
