Description
mid 19th century, 270 x 153 cm, East Caucasus, Azerbaijan

This very rare carpet with a completely corroded brown-black ground was woven in a workshop of the town of Surakhani north of Baku. The field has an extremely dense floral repeat in pastel shades which also decorates the wide border in a slightly altered form. It may have been modelled on French Savonnerie rugs. These Caucasian carpets with European patterns were made for Russian clients.
Three corners are incomplete and rebound, new overcasting along the sides, the original kilim finishes survive, a number of repairs, otherwise in good condition.
