Description
mid 19th century, 175 x 112 cm, South West Anatolia
BENSOUSSAN, PAMELA, Melas Rugs from Asia Minor. In: HALI 5, 2, 1982, p. 124, pl. V
This Milas prayer rug in outstanding colours is a typical representative of the period known as “Turkish Baroque”. Reputedly on the initiative of Sultan Abdulmecid I, new designs were created in those days in a style characteristic of the times that is totally different from the old Turkish tradition. The high, light brown mihrab field shaped like a tower and ending as a steep stepped arch at the top stands alone in a largely empty, blazing red field.
Slight damage to the lower right corner. Good overall condition, original selvedges and red kilim finishes.
