STAFFORDSHIRE FIGURINE PRODIGAL'S RETURN 19 century LARGE RARE Victorian
Item Details
Description
This is a beautiful and very unusual Staffordshire figurine that depicts Return of the prodigal son.
This is really a very rare and unusual example of Staffordshire pottery figure
The figurine is circa 1870.
The figure has many fine hand painted details including attractive facial features, rich and colorful detail
It is original, antique figurine and it shows all the obvious signs:
1.) The typical old base does not have casting holes.
2.) Note typical flaws such as firing lines, glaze frizzle, bumps and pitting
3.) Paint is uneven like the orange on the king coat.
4.) Shows fine brush strokes on the details.
5.) Most gold used on original figures has a softer appearance.
This is a very large figural group. It stands 14" tall and it is 6 3/4" by 3 3/4" at the base.
The figure is in good condition. There is some crazing that is normal for those figurines, as well as, some minimal paint loss.
There is a small line on the father hat. It looks more like defect during firing than a crack.

Staffordshire figures and animals were made by many different potters and factories and were rarely signed.
English pottery figural groups were made during the later part of the 18th Century.
They were potted from simple two-piece press molds. Once dry, the molds were placed together and thin rolls of clay were inserted to seal the seams inside. The next step was to make a small hole, usually on the base, so that air was able to escape during the firing process. After the first firing, the figures were painted with underglaze colors and then dipped into a liquid glaze. Once this process was completed, the figures were then painted with enamel, over glaze, colors and any gilding required and then fired a final time. Due to the deposits of clay left in the molds, the average mold's life would not last for more than 100 figures without severe loss of quality. This is one way to tell the age of the figure, the cleaner and crisper, the earlier it was produced in the mold's life. The more often the mold was used, the less the quality of the figure produced.
