Description
LEHAR, FRANZ. (1870-1948). Hungarian operetta composer whose most famous work is The Merry Widow. APCS. (“Lehar, F.”). ½p. Postcard. Paris, April 4, 1928. Written on a photographic postcard depicting Paris’s Arc de Triomphe. To his friend, music critic JULIUS BISTRON. In French with translation.
“Many heartfelt greetings from Paris. Paganini goes marvelously. The 100th performance will be on May 25th. I was invited to conduct. I will conduct The Zarewitsch in Vienna on 18/5. Most heartfelt greetings from yours very truly…”
Although Lehár was born in the Kingdom of Hungary (modern Slovakia), he spent much of his life abroad. Beginning in 1899, he worked in Vienna and in 1902 he was appointed the conductor of the prestigious Theater an der Wien. “The extent of the development of Lehár’s musical style was unusually great, if not unique, for an operetta composer,” and his works include The Land of Smiles, Giuditta, Der Graf von Luxemburg, and Der Zarewitsch, mentioned here, (The New Grove Dictionary). Lehar also mentions his biographical three-act operetta Paganini, composed in 1926 and based on the life of legendary Italian violinist Nicolo Paganini (1782-1840).
