PUCCINI, GIACOMO. (1858-1924). Along with Verdi, modern Italy’s most successful opera composer. AMusQS. (“Giacomo Puccini”). 1p. 32mo. ( 1¾” x 3”). Torre del Lago, May 2, 1908. Puccini’s visiting card on which he has penned four measures in 2/4 time from a passage identified as from Madame Butterfly to which he has added his signature and the date.
Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, inspired by David Belasco’s play of the same name, opened and closed at Milan’s La Scala on February 17, 1904, and the uncharacteristic silence of the audience deteriorated into outright mockery which lasted until the opera’s melodramatic conclusion. Puccini immediately began revising the work and presented several different versions over the next few years. It remains one of Puccini’s most beloved operas and features one of opera’s most famous arias, “Un bel dì, vedremo.”
