Item Details
Description
A pair of sunglasses with blue-tinted lenses and thin wire frames, in simulated leather covered card slipcase. Together with a Mont-Blanc fountain pen and a folding matchbook for "Restarante El Patio", signed and incribed in blue ink "To Francis Love from John Lennon / Yoko Ono". A small candid black and white photo of John and Yoko Also has been glued to the back of the matchbook. Also included is a letter of provenance from the original recipient of the items and a Certificate of Authenticity for the matchbook from Tracks, signed by Paul Wane.
These items were gifted to Francisca Umbert, switchboard operator at Melia Mallorca Hotel when John Lennon and Yoko Ono were staying there in April, 1971. The couple became friendly with Francisca as they would walk past her on the way to their room. On one occasion they asked her to recommend a restaurant where they could have a quiet dinner without being bothered and she suggested "El Patio". When they returned, John signed the matchbook for her. Later, during their stay, John and Yoko were visited at the hotel by the police and taken in for questioning after Tony Cox, Yoko's ex-husband, accused the couple of kidnapping Kyoko, his and Ono's daughter from a children's meditation camp in Mallorca. At the tme, Cox and Ono were embroiled in a custody battle for Kyoko. After they were released from custody, John and Yoko returned to the hotel. On their final day at the hotel, Lennon signed some documents for his assistant May Pang who had been waiting for him and then gave the pen and his sunglasses to Francisca.
