Robert-Houdin Glass Dial Mystery Clock. Paris, ca. 1840. “Series 2” mystery clock with a glass dial supporting a single hand. As designed by Robert-Houdin, the “father of modern magic,” the timepiece is set to run and chime despite no apparent connection between the dial and hand and the base of the clock. Roman numeral hour markers with five subdivisions and three subunits. Mechanism concealed inside a case decorated with gilt appliques and griffins supporting the dial. Two train movement is time and strike. 13 ½ x 5 x 5 ¼” on a gilt wooden base 2 ¾ x 4 ¼ x 7”. With key. Detailed condition report available on request. Third party shipping required.
