Description
An absolutely wonderful extremely rare pair of cut steel earrings made in the 1940's.... with faceted brass bottoms. These were probably an original screw-back earring but we found them as they are now. Part of Estate Sale here in Manhattan. Light in weight but so elegant! The wires are sterling silver. Each earring measures 2 3/4 inches long and 1 inch wide, at its widest. Only 10.1 g 6.5 dwt. Fabulous!
The pair has an antique "look" and can easily be mistaken for Victorian earrings. Cut steel was used extensively in the production of earrings throughout the Georgian and Victorian eras. It carried through, to a lesser extent, to the early and mid 1900's with production in America It is rare to find a pair with the combination of cut steel and brass, even though they go together so well!
