Description
Late 16th C./early 17th C. Japanese Namban box with a domed hinged lid, body and sides divided into panels separated by horizontal and vertical bands of geometric shell inlay. Each panel with dense decoration of foliage among typical Namban tendrils, the vines and leaves rendered in the Kakiwari technique. The interior and underside in plain black lacquer. The inside of the lid is embellished in gold with clematis scrolls, and all the corners of the lid and body are applied with copper gilt fittings, two loose ring handles on the sides, and an elaborate lock plate on the front. 9”H x 15”L x 7”D.
Condition
Some veneer and shell loss, interior with lacquer ware loss.
