Antique 2-Panel Folding Chinese Screen Featuring the Male and Female Phoenix
Antique Chinese Screen featuring paintings on rice paper of the male and female versions of the phoenix, a yin and yang metaphor. On the left panel the male phoenix stands near a ledge around pine trees and tall white flowers as he watches the female (featured on the right panel) who looks back at him as she stands on another ledge among bamboo and tall red and white flowers. The paintings are 'framed' on each of the panels with a golden-colored silk fabric featuring floral and geometric designs in the weave. In Chinese mythology the phoenix reigns over all other birds, symbolises celestial bodies and appears in areas blessed with peace, prosperity and happiness.
